"Dull" spot on T42p screen - questions....?

#1 Post by Highline » Tue Jun 07, 2005 9:00 am

Hi all.

On the screen of my 2373-P1U T42p screen I have a spot on the bottom in the middle that is "dull" and dimming. It is noticable and drives an obsessive guy like me crazy!

Does anyone else have this problem? Would my warranty cover this? How would it be fixed?

Thank you in advance.

Highline,

I understand what you feel, being somewhat  obsessive myself.

In response to your question, this problem is not uncommon. I have had a couple of laptops myself that had dark spots (usually in the lower right corner). I am not very well versed in LCD technology, but I suspect this has something to do with slight defects in the background diffusor foil (the part of your LCD that is responsible for transmitting the light from the cathode as evenly as possible).

Unfortunately, I don't think Lenovo would replace the LCD for you unless the problem is very obvious and annoying. If you are still within the 30 day period, my advice would be to return the computer and order a new one. Unless you think you can ignore this, which time will probably help you to do as you treat your computer more as a functional tool and less as a work of art.

I wish you luck!

If you have ThinkPad Protection, open up a service ticket with them. Mine had the same problem (they blamed it on pressure - do you pack things next to your TP in a shoulder bag or something?)

Anyway, you can tell them you want to bring it to a local repair shop, where the person will evaluate it and bill IBM. I had quite a bit of trouble with TPP/Memphis Repair.

Hi Thinker,

I had the same, "dull spot - approx 2*2mm", problem and it drove me crazy for a week, I opened a ticket with IBM, they took the machine and replaced it within two days. They never told me how many pixels were dead or defective, they simply replaced the screen.

If you have the warranty and the dull spot is large enough, there should be no problem for the change.

Thank you all very much for your replies!

I just learned that the local IBM repair shop is 10 minutes from my house... which makes life much easier :)

I can notice the spot clearly when there is a light background... and it drives me nuts. :P

I got my TP back in November and have not had a single problem other than this since I've gotten it. Except today, I got the new IBM auto-updater thingy and it updated my bluetooth drivers. Now BT wont work at all. The BT icon stays red and acts as if it cant detect my hardware. Any ideas?

Woops. I think I just hijacked my own thread... :P

aye aye aye!!!

I have a T43 that is just out of warranty as of January 07. Just recently (two weeks now) the entire bottom quarter of my LCD is now lighter then the rest of the LCD. If i flex or wobble the screen any bit that bottom quarter of the screen flashes and goes white and distorts.

Ahhh!!

Since my warranty is up, how much does this sort of thing usually cost to fix? Worse comes to worse how much does IBM charge for a full LCD replacement?

Nothing like breathing life into a thread that has been dormant for two years :D

The IBM website has a list of service centers. Actually, when you go look at Thinkpads it brings you to Lenovo. It lets you search via zip code.

Interesting, as I mentioned in my post above two years ago, my TP is currently in the service center getting the motherboard replaced. The USB ports, fingerprint reader and BT stopped working altogether. I brought it in last thursday and I get it back on monday! Can't wait!

Bill--- I will be looking to purchase a new one from you soon sir! Best laptops in the world!

Thanks for the quick reply!

Can you post up the link to the page where you enter the zipcode? I can not seem to find it :(

This is the link I had book marked that I used to find my service center.

Peace!

Bill: Are you still selling new Thinkpads? Your website seems out of date??

Yes, I was slightly confused here when someone asked if the T42 in question was still within the 30 day period. Apart from creating confusion, I guess little or nothing of the information revealed here is valid today.

Edit: Is your current T42 the same as the one in the first post? Still going strong? No major issues over the years?

Still going strong!

Currently typing my reply right here on it... while watching The West Wing. Only problems I've had is a current broken left metal hinge, broken fan, and issues with the fingerprint scanner/bluetooth.

Other than those issues, it still works great.
