T42 Laptop Freezes and can not be shut off:

#1 Post by shorgan » Tue Jun 07, 2005 10:47 am

I have had 5 different T42 machines freeze and fail to be recovered. Ctrl-alt-del will not wake them and it will not power off using the power button. In all cases I had to undock the machines and pull the battery to get them to turn off. This definetly seems like a hardware issue to me but diags come up clean and eventlogs are empty.

Has anyone seen or experienced any similar behavior? I only have one repeat offender so far.

Things I have done:
Upgraded Bios
Upgraded Video Drivers
Ran IBM Diags

It is really weird for 5 different machines to do this. Are they the same model number? Still weird. What do the machines have in common? Were they hooked up to the same docking station? Are they part of a network (possible malicious code), or do they run some esoteric software that is screwing with the computers at the lowest level?

Please, let us know if you find the solution to this problem.

Good luck.

They are all 2373-JTU 1.7 1GB Ram 32MB RADEON 7500 all on the same network but I have a variety of Thinkpads ranging from T40-T43 all using the same OS image on this network. Over 100 laptops connected to the network at the same time all on there own docking stations. Of the 30 T42's we have I have seen this issue on now 6 of them.

I am not buying the malicious code because this is only happening to the T42's. The one thing they do have in common is that they were all built around the same time.

So far this is unresolved but what I have started to do is rebuild these machines and reissue them to see if this is Hardware or software specific.

I will keep you informed
