14.1" vs. 15" screen

#1 Post by alex.z » Tue Jun 07, 2005 6:54 pm

Hello there!

I'm on the verge of purchasing a new T43 ThinkPad and I need an advice.
Which screen size is the perfect blend between portability and performance/quality.

I've seen the thread where you see the family (15" 14.1" and the X40), and the 15" does look noticeably big. Is that really so? How much heavier is it as well?

I tried to search the forum, yet was left with no answers.
I'm franky quite surprised that the topic hasn't come up.

What I liked especially on the 15" is the curved handrest. The 14.1" looks really uncomfortable in that respect - is it so?

I also understand that the 15" feature the FlexView technology. Is the extra weight/size worth it?

How about dot pitch? How's the SXGA+ on the 14.1"? Is text readable, etc? How is that compared to the SXGA+ 15"?

Sorry for the long post and the tons of questions.
I'm in a real dilemma. Please do help me make up my mind.

Regards, Alex

Actually, it has come up quite often. See nice summary here:

The 15" is one of the thinner 15" notebooks out there, not to mention the excellent weight distribution. I've handled one once and its about 2.5 pounds less and up to .5" thinner than my current 15" notebook.

The extra screen real estate is nice when doing work, I can have two things side by side (it is small but crisp) on a 15" UXGA, and I can also do text editing and monitor another program beside it (instant messaging for example) and below it (winamp for example). That's just my workflow. I initially wanted a 14.1" SXGA T43p, but I've settled on the 15" and I'm looking forward to receiving it. I'll certaily try to post a comparo between it and my Dell.

Just saying that in my brief time playing with a 15" T42 it's a nice feeling unit. Heavier than the 14" but better than just about every other 15" I've used.
X31, T43p (on sale soon I think :( ), T400
