The T420s panels shouldn't be compatible with the T420. There are mods available that change this, but this requires some DIYing. For more information see this post: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=118070 .

The easiest way I know to check compatability is to check whether there are panels that fit in both laptops according to Lenovo themselves. This means looking at the parts list for both laptops and checking whether or not the same FRU numbers fit in both laptops. You can find these in the support page of the T420 and T420s.
