Modern Day PC110 Replacement??

Hi Folks,

I used to own a PC110 machine for the longest of times and sold it at some point last year.

I ran across this today and it made me think of the PC110 machine.

I did order one, so hopefully it will live up to their hype/specs.

I used to be into tiny machines (mostly from Sony) and umpc's as well.

If the machine does make it into production I will do a review of it.

Anyway I wanted to know what you think about the design and of the idea of it.

Thanks for an excellent PC110, it sits in Pelican case with another unit well protected and admired once a week

As for that machine, I do not know... Looks OK but we have to wait for the build quality if it lives up to the expectation. I wish it had better processor though. AND dedicated graphics chip... We will see. Looks like a good platform for Windows XP and old games

In any case, it certainly can not come even close to PC110. Just because it was made by IBM

I've always like the idea of UMPC. Unfortunately I did not have any money when they were popular, and now that I have some disposable income nobody makes them anymore.
So I did seriously consider getting one of those GPD Win machines. However my decision is to hold off for a while, because 1. I prefer a more angular aesthetics (like the Toshiba Lifebook U810) and 2. That GPD only has single-band WiFi (bgn = 2.4GHz only).

Why dont they make it like the OQO - i want a slider UMPC

Im currently having the latest UMPC avaible with a keyboard - the F-07C. However, its becoming rather slow by todays standards....

I would like to support this campaign... But its flexible funding, so if it doesn't reach its goal there will be no refund. And since they have no working prototype or anything, it migth be a scam

They're probably using Indiegogo simply for publicity. By all accounts they've already completed the current design (and is not taking any more suggestions for improvement). Right now they are basically offering preorders, "flexible goal" and all that.

I used to be into tiny machines (mostly from Sony) and umpc's as well.

Sony's P Series remains the best pocketable laptop IMO. I owned one for about a year. Small enough to fit in a pants pocket, but just big enough that it's possible to type almost normally. But I ended up selling it because Windows 7 was too slow on it, and the tiny screen was uncomfortable to use. I wish Sony had made it as tall and wide as possible to take full advantage of the height and width of the display lid. At 1600x768, it's better than 1366x768, but there was a lot of wasted space around the screen. It could have been 1920x800, without changing the pixel density or lid size.

Too bad Sony dropped out of the PC market. If it were still making laptops, I bet it would have come up with something even better, considering how good it is at miniaturization.

Sony had a few really thin machines in the early 2000s and they had a tiny one that was square shaped that I owned (I forget the model). They also had a UMPC that had a slide up screen to reveal a keyboard under it. The screen was a touch screen and you could use a stylus.

There is something about a tiny machine that I really like.

I have had a HTC Shift, OQO 01+ and currently have a Fujitsu F-07C.

The OQO 01+ was very, very close to being the perfect device. If they released a similar machine with just a updated screen, and newer hardware i would be sold. It simply had everything i could ask for, in such a tiny device - while maintaining great build quality and a good input devices.

It became too slow for daily use, so i swapped it with the latest currently avaible UMPC - the Fujitsu F-07C. But the 1 GB RAM and super slow Atom Z600 just doesn't cut it, it cant even be used to browse... And furthermore the batterylife is bad (2h - and you cannot use the batterygauge in windows)

The GPD Win is the first UMPC for 5 years. It will have quite a bit of computing performance, and good batterylife. However, i wish it woulc be a slider or a "flip"-convertible so one can use the screen without opening the device. The clamshell design is just not practical in my opinion.

But i have preordered one. Who knows if this is the only UMPC avaible for the next 5 years

I just recieved mine today. Im rather impressed by the quality, taken the price into account. The keyboard/keys migth be a little mushy and the unit is all plastic - but other than that, it seems sturdy enough.
Finally a up-to-date pocketable computer!

I am getting mine today, so I am looking forward to the tiny machine. It's on the DHL delivery truck and should be delivered by End of Day. I am not sure when they say EOD, what time are they talking about.

It looks like it could be cherished by the emulation Homebrew crowd.
I wonder how well Nintendo will be with their Switch (previously known as the NX) gaming console.

If there is enough fans for it, and demand, it may outweigh that system.
I wonder if this machine supports eGPU setups, because it could be a dang neat portable gaming computer.

No eGPU possibilities. The Aton chipset is setback by only 2 PCIe lanes, where one goes to wifi..

But i must say im suprised performance wise. It is close to the C2D laptop CPUs on full speed, and w/o turboboost the battery lasts quite a long time!

There are plenty of room for improvement. But this is a crowdfunded project, that comes in cheap.. And delivers.
