How To Get More V Ram Memory From HD Graphics On A T410?

#1 Post by TheMagicT410 » Tue Mar 08, 2016 11:48 am

Hi.
I was hopping if their is away to get more Memory on Intel HD Grapics on my T410 i have Intel HD Graphics (I7) dedicated is 64mb and i am able to get over 1gb of v ram memory so i can play games that require more vram for example. i have 8gb ram so i have plenty to spend on the video ram.

MineCraft,Gta 4 (as is wont let me turn up settings as i run at 40-50fps),rust legacy, and much more

tf their is a way then i would love to know!

Thanks!

Im using a intel core i7 640m (ik its wasnt a option to get it but did some looking up and it would work supprorts chipset and socket)
8gb ram
intel Hd Graphics (i think HD1000 im not sure do u know what hd graphics the T410 has?)

There isn't.

The system allocates the amount of VRAM from the "main" memory as it deems fit. There is no user input in the process.

There is no way to set a specific value of ram for the integrated gpu. Some motherboards have a feature to set the maximum amount of ram that the gpu can take from system memory, but no such setting exists on any thinkpad.

I didn't find out about this limitation until after I bought my T410. Even with 8gb ram, the Intel HD Graphics only gets 64mb of dedicated video memory. I have the T410 connected via DisplayPort to an Asus VE248Q monitor and there are some online video streams that simply will not play smoothly full screen. For example, I tried to watch previous episodes of NBC's Blindspot http://www.nbc.com/blindspot/episodes and they were unwatchable. Yet, they play fine, full screen on my Lenovo M83 desktop system, full screen, to an identical Asus monitor.

20/20 hind sight, I should have gotten a model with the discrete graphics. :(

You could use integrated graphics on the i7? I thought 1st gen i7 didn't have intel graphics.

The memory used by the GPU should dynamically change based on demand from applications. It seems in your case it is stuck at 64mb. I would try updating the gpu drivers or set the power saving mode to 'performance' or similar in the intel HD graphics control panel.

same here i thought all desktops and laptop motherboards would come with an option too.

i also regret getting the HD graphics one too even tho its still rather good to use very stable and smooth.

You may try burning and booting a linux live distro on a usb stick, and running the same applications you tried before. Linux intel drivers tend to be better than the ones in Windows, especially if the gpu has been out for 3-4+ years. You can run this command in a terminal to see the maximum memory that can be allocated to the intel gpu:

Code: Select all

sudo dmesg | grep drm

The intel gpu on my 2520m toughbook gets 2048 MB when I run it. I would expect the same or at least 1024 MB for yours.

EDIT: Nevermind, I misunderstood your question. You can get over 1.5GB, but asked if you could get more.

i will give that ago when my t410 isnt my main laptop.

ive never used linux so it would take time to get used to

or i can buy an old hdd and test it would be a good idea (might try it out as it wont effect my main hdd)

More likely your performance issues are just a slow GPU rather than graphics memory. I especially doubt very much you need a lot of that for video playback. Even if you could have 2+ GB of dedicated memory on an Intel HD (Gen 1) it would probably have negligible impact. GPU performance has been increasing quite a bit faster than CPU in recent years, even for Intel GPUs so 6 years is an eternity.

I think you may be right. My Lenovo M83 desktop, which plays video streams fine, has the Intel HD Graphics 4600 with 256mb dedicated memory. The T410 I'm sure has 1st gen Intel HD.

A T410 should not have problems streaming video 1080p and lower. Even my T9500 T61 could stream 1080p video no problem. The problem is most likely the driver. It would be interesting to see if Linux gives better performance playing the videos. Also, try using chrome. It gives much smoother media playback than firefox in my experience.

I've tried playing the Blindspot episodes with both Firefox and IE11. Surprisingly, IE11 is a little bit better but there is still too much stuttering to make it watchable. I've never installed Chrome.

Pretty sure there will be no more new Windows drivers for it from Intel. Last ones were released in Nov 2013:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... Vista-exe-
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... ta-64-exe-
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... ws-XP-exe-
It's tricky to search for Intel graphics drivers because titles & descriptions don't always make clear which generation(s) the driver covers. You end up needing to check the readme files to be sure.

I installed Chrome with all extensions disabled. I set the Lenovo Power Manager to Maximum Performance. I also turned off Norton a/v and firewall. From the Taskbar, I quit all unnecessary programs running in the background. My goal was to maximize the T410's performance by stopping other tasks.

After some initial buffering stutters, the video stream seemed to play pretty well, though I haven't watched the whole 43 minute episode yet. I even used my DP/HDMI cable to view it full screen on my Samsung HDTV and it looked pretty good.

I have a 50/50Mb internet connection and the T410 is connected wirelessly to the 5G band of my router, so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue.

I'll see if I can watch both episodes without the stuttering.

Some hints. 1st gen. core i7 are really 2 different families of CPUs:
dual cores from X201 (eg 640M) are 32nm Arrandale - it have iGPU, and
quad cores from W701 (eg 820QM) are 45nm Clarksfield - it trade iGPU for additional 2 cores ;)
But other question (for me) - what is "Dedicated Video Memory"? AFAIK all intel GPU use system memory except Iris Pro.

For TS - check PowerManager if it kick in TurboBoost. It showed like icon when PowerManager in simple mode with power slider.
Also check task manager (other system tool) if video decoding processed on GPU or CPU.

You are correct. On these systems "Dedicated Video Memory" is a specific amount of system memory that is reserved for video. On my T410 64MB is reserved out of 8GB system memory.

Are You Intrested In Getting More Vram On Your T410 Using HD Graphics?

#24 Post by TheMagicT410 » Sat Mar 12, 2016 9:24 am

Hello everyone
I am very very excited to tell you how you can go to 64mb of video memory on your thinkpadt410 to 128mb 2x more than it was before!

before i installed it i had 64mb of video memory and my windows index score was 4.5!

now i have 128mb of video Memory and a windows index score of 4.5!!

you can now play more demanding games that needs more vram and have a better gaming and using experance i hope you all enjoy and it
works for you all!

i also got a higher clock speed as the stock is 766mhz and i was hittiing 796mhz so its a overclock and you also get better fps in games better perfomance. A higher amount of memory dedicated to Video memory and a overclock. Happy Days!

i am now able to fully play gta 4 now as before i wasnt able to as i had such low video memory so thats a big thing u an play gta 4 on hd 1000!
