changing hard drive to 100GB

#1 Post by ruykava » Wed Jun 08, 2005 3:53 pm

hi all,

hope this hasn't been posted before. if it has would appreciate if someone could provide me with a link -- thanks!

anyway, i'm thinking of getting a new 2.5", 7200rpm, 100GB hard drive for my T42p to replace my current 60GB baby, which is beginning to fill up fast. can i just open up the T, plug out the old drive, then plug in the new one? how easy is this process and are any tools required? thanks for all the help!

as i have an external USB - 2.5" IDE enclosure, i'm thinking of using some sort of cloning software (norton ghost?) to clone my present disk on the new one, as well.

at the same time: anyone know if IBM has a dual-layer DVD burner i could swap my present DVD burner with? *rubs hands in glee*

Norton Ghost cost me 2 precious days of my life and seven failed clones. I had no chance over USB or Firewire.

Arconis TrueImage did the job the first time round over USB.

I moved from 40Gb to 80GB using Acronis TrueImage--it was totally painless.

how exactly was ghost failing? i'm on my 3rd hour of playing with it now :), i'm only trying to clone the IBM_PRELOAD partition, dont care for the R&R one, nor the special MBR code. I'm using an old 20gb toshiba drive in an usb enclosure, it's split in two 10gb partitions. It would start to boot, but ends up with a BSOD advising me to run chdsk /F, which doesn't really find any issues with the drive...

I'm using norton ghost for 5 years now, and never had issues with it, so what exactly is it, thats messed up here? would a normal clean winxp install clone fine? is it just the special mbr code on the preloaded drives?
