Compatibility T9900 in W500

#1 Post by AdaSch » Sun Mar 20, 2016 7:31 am

Hello,

few days ago I installed T9900 in my W500

I'm not sure about if last bios it is full compabilitywith T9900

software like OCCT can't read manufacturer bus and speed, other software like CPU-Z can read this

second is multiper. Default is *11,5 (3,06GHz) but sometime I see in Z-cpu switches on *12 3,2GHz (only on last bios 3.25, I don't observe this on 3.24)

before this I had T9600 2,8GHZ but my user feeling for new T9900 is very impresive (startup system, applications etc.)

If looking on HMM T9900 is on the list, but when we look on product specification on lenovo website I can see T9800 as last

what is opinion other users T9900?

p.s.
I don't notice heat problem. Diamond paste Gelig GC extrme make good work

T9900 should work with no issues in any of the *00 ThinkPads. No clue on why the software in question fails to read its properties correctly.

Make sure you are running a relatively new version of the software to read hardware info properly.

Probably best to be 1~2 years newer than the hardware.

Currently my W500 with T9900 and WUXGA is only used for my kids playing Minecraft, but I have never had any issues after I upgraded the CPU to T9900.

I ask for it, because CPU-Z sometimes reports speed 3,2 GHz
Voltage is different to (over cpu spec)

BTW I'm pleased after change from T9600

That would be IDA (Intel Dynamic Acceleration) kicking in. It's the predecessor of the Turbo Boost feature found in Core i5 and i7 processors.
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts

I read same articles about IDA and you have right!
T9900 can switch from @3,06 to @3,2GHz aka multiplier 11,5 to 12

report after few months...

I think, I found reason why T9900 i W500 is like holly grall

this config is very rare because he have few problems..

first, I have new MB with bios 7V (newest hardware)

ok, some about problems

firs is heat!
its possible to overheat only by torture T9900 (yes, I use best diamond paste and I do many test)
CPU can reach almost 100stC with tpffancontrol with settings on full fan speed (over 4500 rpm not avail in normal bios)

second is PWM!
when I run together test GPU and CPU PWM on MB reach very high temp and bios slow down cpu at half (1,5+GHz)
testing under OCCT software

in some games (Life for speed) I notice this situation

third is most funny :)
when switch setting in bios in thermal managment from "maximum" to "balance" in AC scheme windows don't start, becouse T9900 reach very high temp under bios settings. When W7x64 starts W500 just crash becouse cooling is too weak! - for start iI use vacum cleaner :) (cpu temp 38C)

I do not notice this problems with T9600

Do I back? I don't think so. Its hard to believe, but T9900 is very powerful, system works great and its strange, but I feel difference.

I very recommend do some trick under system recovery :)
when first step under recovery is done (after coping fom cd to HDD), I just swap under other system all old software and drivers to most latest but not power manager and active connections
(3.67 and 5.98)

my config under recovery (swapped files)

Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software II Ver. 6.2.1.31
Conexant Audio Software Ver. 4.92.12.0
ICH9 4k512e - YES! its ahci rapid driver version 9.6.4.102 (for advanced sector 4k - req for new disk with advanced format) ps.2 remove turbo memory!
Integrated Camerave. Ver. 1.32.500.0

ThinkVantage GPS Ver. 2.81

Lenovo Mobile Broadband Activation 4.8.0003
ThinkVantage Communications Utility Ver. 2.11.0.0 added under revovery by ctrl+alt+del and task manager
Hotkey Features Integration Ver. 3.89.0000

after this I put intel turbo memory and manully install driver thru device manager (its very important!, you cant run setp becuse this swap ahci driver)
then I configure ITM as temp
no more temp files on main disk!
I use ITM as temp for browsers, system, etc

after this, SP1 (lenovo OEM W7 recovery don't have version with sp1)
and updates without bellow spy and another crap

I do this same on X120e, X301, W700 and yes! old T43p

Recovery from W500 Win 7 x86 generally fit for T43p :)
some drivers must be add manually, but this is not problem.
my Old IBM 14" T43p 2,26GHz plus 2GB RAM, plus hitachi 7k100 100GB works fine with Windows 7 x86 pro as service computer in garage :)

Is this the most powerful CPU compatible with the W500?
Any chance of getting one of the early Quad cores working?

T9900 YES and NO!

If you need power in short and medium peaks etc. answer is YES, if you need Power in long term answer is NO!

First problem is heat - Maximum load and in few minutes you can reach 90C+ degrees (diamond paste and other super hiper pastes blah blah blah)
of course tpfanconrol can help (near 5k rpm) but this is not solve because temp of PWM is going up and BIOS or whatever slowdown CPU to 1,5GHZ, when PWM reach lower temps, CPU again speed up go to 3,06 or 3,2GHZ (probably only with Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.60)

cheers

You're behind the times, old friend.

My W7 install for T43p is based on recovery media for T410... :D
