TP540P and Travelstar 7K1000

#1 Post by CharlesF » Thu Mar 31, 2016 7:41 pm

Has any one used the 7200 rpm Travelstar in a TP540p or know if it will work. My internal drive is failing and I'm thinking of replacing it with the Travelstar.

Thanks.

Charles

Should work fine, presuming your BIOS will understand 1TB.

I tried a 1 TB WD drive in my old X230 and could not get it to work but this is a 3 year old machine and your machine is newer.

Thanks for the response.

I'm assuming that BIOS will not be a problem since Lenovo's compatibility table shows that a 1TB 5400 rpm drive is usable with the TP540p.

Yes. The speed does not matter to the BIOS.

I don't think any system less than 10 years old should have a problem with 1 TB capacity.
Maybe OS issues with 4k sectors though or a problem with that specific drive.

I have a 1 TB SSD in my T440p right now so definitely no problem there.

Agreed. I've owned numerous *61 systems which were running 1TB spinners. No issues whatsoever. I can't imagine a newer ThinkPad having problems with such a drive.

How is the performance between 1 platter 500GB version usually found as 7mm height and 2 platters 1TB 9.5mm drives?

Cheers, thinkpadcollection
