ThinkPad 560 2640 - disassembly

Hello!

I have a problem with my fresh bought ThinkPad 560. I want to restore to use this laptop old like me. It's working on charger of my T40...but i have a problem: how to remove the keyboard from MB, because near touchpad something blocks it to remove. After running, BIOS show three error (two are about CMOS battery, but third error is about keyboard)

I removed finally the keybord, plugged out, plugged in, and 00301 error disappear! Now i have question about HDD. I want to use my unused MicroSDHC 4 GB card and MicroSD -> IDE adapter. My question is: can my 560 handle 4 GB card, or maybe use smaller SD card?

Yes, the 560/E are good up to 8.4GB like all other machines prior to the Pentium MMX era (the machine will freeze up if you try to install a drive larger than 8.4GB unless you use a bootable disk overlay program, remember)

Nice to hear that! But...MicroSD adapters are very expensive for my wallet . So i have a question about CF card...every CF card are compatible with ATA standard and supporting boot mode?

Sorry for the late reply on this, but I'm just surfing through the forum on a Sunday morning.

Setting up a compact flash/ide adapter may or may not work. In my 365X, I tried a couple of different CF-IDE adapters and neither worked. Then I discovered that I didn't need one.

The 365X boots nicely from a CF card in a PCMCIA adapter. So I just pulled the hard drive completely. It's such a nice, silent (fanless, no spinning platters) little device. Although, every once in a while, I'd swear I can hear it 'thinking hard.'

There's a thread here (http://www.os2museum.com/wp/thinkpad-pc-card-boot/) in which a gentleman posts that the plain 560 (not 560X or 560Z) will also boot from PCMCIA. You can find the adapters on eBay for about $3 CAD, shipped.

Edit: there's also a discussion in that thread about whether the CF card has to be set to 'fixed' rather than 'removable' in order to boot. I don't recall doing anything special to mine in order to boot from the PCMCIA slot, but it was at least 5 years ago.

Of course i lost any hope that somebody answer and help with this. Today i screwed on a parts my 560. I got CF Card and adapter...But as you said...it doesn't work. When i plugged correctly adapter just like hard disk in HMM...laptop doesn't want to run. Black screen, no reaction on LEDs. I tried to swap jumpers, this not helped. And i was desperated to buy another adapter...But You knocked out my idea to buy second ATA adapter I still belive i can run this on my laptop

So is my question...PCMCIA adapter will reduce speed of my CF card? I know about similarities between PCMCIA and CF card. But i want to earn some knowlegde
