A31p - what is the normal, unstressed cpu temperature?

#1 Post by kchung » Thu Jun 09, 2005 2:15 pm

Hi fellow thinkpad users,

I've got an A31p, model 2653-R5U that just got a new 60 gig drive courtesy of IBM a week ago (previous one had ATAPI/DISK errors - random thunks, you know...).

But now the system has started randomly blue screening - twice this AM with STOP 0x000000F4 errors.

I was present during the last crash and the CPU fan was at high speed, the drive was making a funny buzzing (not thunking) noise.

DFT passed. A fellow IT person recommended that I check the CPU fan - it's running currently but not a full blast like before but it is pumping out a lot of hot air.

I have installed SpeedFan on the laptop and it's reporting that the hard drive is 40C but the CPU is running 67C (152 F). I'd think that's a little hot, no?

Does anyone know what the A31p CPU normal running temperature should be?

Thanks in advance!

Mine runs up to about 75-80 C before it throttles back under heavy HL2 usage. The P4-M CPU will run to 140 C unlike the Pentium 4 which is to about 95 -110 Maximum C. It will keep my coffee warm :)

Speedfan will not adjust the fan on the a31p. :( You cannot set it. There are three temperature sensors which the ACPI software uses to determine speed. Blow out the case and CPU sink with air. Get the drive checked. The CPU temp is normal for moderate to heavy use.

During non stress in my 1.7GHz P-M on A31p is between 45 - 50 C. Of course I have it in adaptive mode so during idle it will clock 1.2GHz then to 1.7GHz depending on demand.

I don't recollect the processor going over 70C
