T60 runs hotter when charging
T60 runs hotter when charging
Hi there, I've noticed the T60 running hotter sometimes even shutting down if I forget to put the fan on speed 7 and been meaning to open and redo thermal compound and clean fan. Yesterday I unplugged the charger and notice the cpu drop about 15 degrees. It does not seem to overheat when not charging, any thoughts out there?
Re: T60 runs hotter when charging
It may be (in fact likely) that the power settings are configured differently for running on battery vs running on AC. It is possible that on AC the CPU always runs at maximum frequency, and on battery it is locked to minimum frequency, or changes dynamically based on load. This can cause a meaningful difference in temperatures.
Still, if it gets so hot to cause shutdowns, this is never normal. Do try the procedures you were planning to do with the fan.

Re: T60 runs hotter when charging
All of my laptops become warmer and even a bit hot when charging, but none of them became so hot that they shut down. I agree with dr_st on the power settings.
Your T60 may also happen to be due for thermal paste or fan replacement.

Re: T60 runs hotter when charging
My T43 experiences the same problem as well... It gets hot when plugged in but fan 7 can hold it back. (Usually CPU idle temp without ac is 40-50 Celsius, 45-65 when plugged in) I checked SpeedStep and other settings in BIOS and they are all configured the same. I have just put in Arctic Silver 5 a few weeks ago and it was much better than before which was around 7-15 degrees higher. My T42 with Pentium M 745 barely even needs a fan while this Pentium 780 may get really hot even with fan on.
