I've been using this T440p machine for like 2 months now.
The aggravating part is the left side of the machine, it gets warm just to the left side of the keyboard and also in the left palmrest.
The processor is a 4710MQ 47Watt TDP
In the primary HDD slot there is a Hitachi 5K500.B 250GB single platter hard drive which in itself is cool running. The OS (Windows 7) is running on a Intel S3700 and the part just above where the Ultrabay HDD caddy sits is not uncomfortable to place your hand over.
Switching over from a cool running T420 with no heat on the palmrest or above the keyboard was a pleasant experience, but on this T440p not so much.
What do you recommend?
1. Get a T460/T460s with the low voltage processors? Do those machines run cool to the touch while doing normal stuff such as listening music on Youtube, Office Work.
2. Replace the Quad Core Processor with a normal one such as the Core i5-4200M?
3. Revert back to a T420 (I gave it as a gift to a relative)
The reason I switched to a newer machine was to get a Full HD display (had to order the AU B140HAN01.2) and indeed it is a good display, but this heat issue is enervating.
BTW, the CPU temps reported by HWMonitor while not doing anything serious plus TPFanControl running all the time at the lowest speed (3000rpm):
Intel Core i7
Voltages
VID 0.676
Temperatures
Core 0 51°C
Core 1 46°C
Core 2 45°C
Core 3 47°C
Can anyone recommend me a new ThinkPad that would run cool?

Re: T440p running hot
There are multiple things you can try:
1. Replace the thermal paste with Tuniq Tx-4 or AS5
2. Increase the fan speed (this will make it louder, though)
3. Clean out the fan

Re: T440p running hot
The laptop is new, it doesn't have any dust built up inside the fan.
I'm thinking maybe put some kind of insulator between the keyboard to keep the heat from creeping to the surface.
