X301 not booting (no lights)

#1 Post by SirWalker » Fri May 27, 2016 6:02 pm

I purchased a used X301 recently, and after replacing the screen, buying a new ultrabay battery, RAM and SSD, it decides that it doesn't want to boot anymore. No response and no lights. I have the best luck.

I've been trying to determine the cause, and have exhausted all the usual troubleshooting tips, (Thinkpad Power button massage, pulling out and replacing the CMOS battery hoping the BIOS was just being weird, re-seat everything I can find) with no results.

I'm hoping it's not the motherboard because I've dropped enough money into this thing, and I don't want to downgrade to an SU9400 if I don't have to.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Was the screen an OEM replacement? If not, then it is quite possible that it has blown a fuse somewhere.

The FRU number and the labels were almost identical, which could mean it was just manufactured at a different time, or be a Chinese fake. The latter theory would also explain why the brightness on the replacement was terrible in comparison to the original.

I'll reinstall the original and see if I can at least get the machine to POST.

UPDATE: Didn't seem to have any effect, though I do have some suspicion it has something to do with the ultrabay battery. The machine stopped working the day after I installed it. Everything else was upgraded at least a few weeks prior.

It would be very helpful and appreciated if you can give us exact P/N or FRU or whatever for that new screen.
X301 never had any other manufacturer make screens for it, and I know some people who would love to upgrade if possible.

P/N: 42T0475
FRU: 42T0476

So the same screen essentially, just one with no dead pixels and no dark spots. Sorry if my wording made it seem as though it was different screen altogether. The only difference between them is one is labeled "Toshiba M a t s u s h i t a" and the other "Toshiba Mobile Display".
