Catalyst 5.6 for notebook users???

#1 Post by kaplanfx » Fri Jun 10, 2005 4:56 pm

Just saw this article: http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/06/10/2005/290/0/ I'm hoping this will work on the 9600 in the future (only X700 and X800 now :( ). I'll check it out when I get home.

The Catalyst driver is working fine for my on my T40 with the 7500 Radeon. Download it and give it a shot.

That new driver? It says it only support the X700 and X800. I am using a Catalyst driver myself but its modified with petje's mod. This new driver is supposed to work with mobility chips unmodified.

Yes, I installed the new drive in that link yesterday. It includes the driver for numerous ATI cards. So far it is working quite well on my T40

Have you previously installed patje's mod? I think that allows the catalyst driver to install as well.

Is it stable??? Catalyst is updated much more often than the IBM drivers, so if they work on older chips, I wouldn't mind using them :)

Ok so here is my experiance. The driver does not work unmodified on a 9600 mobility (like in the T42) but after using patje's mod I was able to succesfully install the drivers and get everything working. The driver itself does improve performace and seems quite stable. The problem is with the ati control center. It has a process called CLI.exe that every few seconds throttles the cpu usage up to 100%. This causes abnormal drain on battery life. I will test again tomorrow and try installing the driver only (no catalyst control center) but my fear is that without the control center powerplay will not work and I will be required to manually downclock the gpu everytime I switch between the plug and battery. I'll update you all again soon.

My experience with the catalyst drivers has been quite good. True, you cannot install it using the "setup" program that comes with the package. You have to use the "update driver" tab from the device manager. Then choose "advanced install" and "I will select driver". You will then see a list of numerous ATI cards. Choose the one you need, reboot, and you should be good to go.

Ok just reinstalled the driver but didn't use the CCC version (catalyst control center) and it does not have the same problem. The CLI.exe process appears to be some .net crap that has issues. Anyhow the 5.6 driver seems to work ok as long as you don't install the control center.

I was able to install the driver on my T42p (FireGL T2), but it would not offer the resolution of my LCD (1400X1040), so I immediately switched back to the driver I got from Windows update (the only that allows me to play Knights of the Old Republic 2).

go to advanced, unclick "hide not supported monitor modes" select any resolution you like.
It runs perfect with SXGA+ and UXGA

it seems, something is wrong with your .Net.

I have all updates and the control panel runs perfectly without problems, even CHC can overclock the ATI on my T40p (FireGl 9000).

I wasn't saying it didn't work, read up further in the thread to see my problem with the catlyst control center.

Now I have a problem. I installed the new catalyst, selected my mobility FireGl 9000 and only recently I discovered that OpenGL was not really that fast. Checked with SiSandra and it says, generic Microsoft OpenGL drivers without hardware support are installed.

Everything is there, but no OpenGL support.
Do I have to go back to IBM drivers, or does ATI not support OpenGL, but only DirectX ?

I am confused. :-(
