Thinkpad T43p heating
Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
I think the Frankenpad as RBS suggests is worth $150 - $250 USD depending on the condition.
I would only think a T43 is worth $15 - $50 USD depending on the internals and condition. A poor condition T43 is junk and maybe worth $5.
Keyboard condition is a good indication of usage.
Saying that it is your money to spend.

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
ok.. so I assume i've been given different prices on pm ( quite a bit higher )shawross wrote:I think the Frankenpad as RBS suggests is worth $150 - $250 USD depending on the condition.
leave alone ebay
if I ever saw or found one for 200$ i would have stopped instantly , bought even 2 if they were available for that price
but never saw that price
unfortunately I never saw or run into these prices , anywhere ..forum , ebay or live..I would only think a T43 is worth $15 - $50 USD depending on the internals and condition. A poor condition T43 is junk and maybe worth $5.
I thought they regularly sold for $100 or more if functional etc, anywhere

Checkout this website
http://ktgee.net/post/49423737148/thinkpad-guide
There is no Frankenpads but you get the idea from the T61p systems
This is a well written guide by a person who does frequent this forum.
The T43 doesn't even get a mention because they are virtually redundant.
Remember this is only a guide but it is a very good guide by someone who knows Thinkpads and what they are worth.
If you are paying outside the limits of this guide you must be getting something very special.
The Frankenpad is special so it is outside the prices for the T61 series.
Thinkpads are well made but you need to know what they are worth and their true condition.
Buying from someone on the forum is probably the safest option if you can.
Goodluck on your purchase.

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
thanks ajkula66..( also for your support on removing the fan in the t43 . i really appreciated that )
I don't know if it can be of any interest to anyone , but the prices I've figured out , as well as got pm , for functioning frankenpads , are definitely not in the $200 range
leave alone there's one fully loaded + optional currently selling for $1000cnd on the marketplace: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=121186
as well as I don't think if in real a decent working t43p ( not missing parts ) can be had -anywhere , if not by an *extremely rare lucky day*- : at the price of 15-50$
so i guess I will eventually offer $100 for one decent t43p if i find a good one , and likely happy with that deal

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
The price range of $15 - $50 is for a T43 not a T43p. If you find a good T43p it is worth $100 maybe more.
It is difficult to generalize on prices and if you find something special from a trusted source you will probably have to pay a premium.

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
My SATA-modded T43 is for sale here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=120015
$140 shipped within USA is very reasonable for such a modded machine.
$190 shipped to Italy (but without battery) is still not bad...
Add $60 for an upgrade to a Sharp UXGA (1600x1200) with ASV (IPS characteristics)

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
I got an r61i
PN: 8943-dkg
will keep you posted , supposely works but I can bring it back if it doesnt work
screen is 15'' , model supposely is quite base , and carry a 1024x768 screen
condition is nice no signs or cracks on the lid or case ; no hd
very little bits of shine on keyboard.
should I be happy ..I don't know .probably yes .
It was quite a flash sale.. for the price I just had to choose and say ok , return is available so ..
starting price was $50 and was able to get it $40
there were some t4x/p ..all in all and given the limited time I had for making a choice in that moment I considered them quite less inviting and focused on the r61i
I can bring it back nontheless and eventually change it for a t4x/p
I will have to spend some time on making upgrades
and of course frankenpad it : upgrade to a 15 uxga+ ips ; i never changed and lcd but should be feasible (?)
this only if and when i will turn it on , verify that it is in good working order
will keep you posted on this

after 100/150hrs gpu is normally going up to 74-76 degreesboodi wrote: Will report on temperatures after 200hrs the thermal paste has broken in , at moment cpu reaches 80 on sustained loads , which is 13 14 degrees better then before ; the gpu still high though , 73-74 that is just a couple degrees lower then before .
It doesn't happen when the pc lays stable , for example on a table in the same position for hours.
I will likely have to underclock it ( after the graphic driver update ) .
What software should i preferably run for doing it ?
cpu can go over 80 degrees for some limited amount of time , but that's the GPU the problem , and without ati drivers i'm not able to unerclock it .
If I undervolt the CPU will I have any GPU benefit ? ( don't think so )

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
I just downloaded the Vista version that is available on the Chinese version of Lenovo site. I got into the same problem as well but it worked fine after I tried that driver. The Chinese version of Lenovo Think website offers all drivers obtained from IBM since numbered series ThinkPads.ajkula66 wrote:Really? Download Link:
http://driverdl.lenovo.com.cn/think/dow ... d302ww.exe
Driver description page in Chinese:
http://think.lenovo.com.cn/support/driv ... osid%3D236
Tried on 2 T43s with X300 in Windows 8.1 update 1 and Windows 10 worked just fine except you have to turn off the screen and turn it back on each time after fast startup feature or else the screen will only display a cursor
Also with a Pentium 780 it can play 1080p videos after the installation of the driver and Windows Aero effects improved dramatically.
I also have a hotkey driver that can work with non-Lenovo ThinkPads since *2x models. PM me if you need assistance

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Yes it is Catalyst: Catalyst Version 03.00.0608
I tried using Catalyst and installing directly from the .inf file and both works for both of my Radeon X300 T43s
You can download from the Lenovo China link and you actually do not have to read any Chinese, it is just .exe self extractor
OH AND ALSO BECAREFUL!! GO TO MSCONFIG OR SERVICES.MSC AND PERMENENTLY DISABLE ATI EXTERNAL EVENT UTILITY!! THAT SERVICE DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY IN WINDOWS 8/10 AND IT EATS YOUR CPU BY 100% FOR NOTHING!!

do not know if you read the whole thread ..
Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
And what do you mean by corrupt? If it is like lines going through it is most likely the screen/cable connection (I have this problem in my A30 as well but it is definitely not GPU's fault since it fixes itself after wobbling the LCD and the issue is not present on a VGA monitor) . If it is blocks of weird text then GPU may be problematic. If it is like text it is only the BIOS setting that turned off the IBM Logo. Also the GPU problem isn't prone to T43 series since either they are heatsinked, or there isn't one at all (GMA). I remembered 3 years ago I played a DirectX 9 intensive games on a Radeon X300 T43 for at least a full year (like I got attracted with that game and I play it at least 2 hours daily) with an inefficient fan that does not spin properly and the GPU still survived fine up to today.boodi wrote: keep in mind the gpu is most likely defective as also IBM logo startup screen is corrupt , this happened lately in this year

Huh. No. If boodi is seeing what I believe that he is seeing - lines of various colours, mostly red and green - on startup, that's a GPU that is on its way out.kfzhu1229 wrote:And what do you mean by corrupt? Completely and utterly incorrect. While T43/p are less prone to GPU failures than the previous T4x series due to the improved soldering process, their GPUs are far from being failure-resistant. Also, even the Intel-based T43s have a heatsink covering the chips involved. Also the GPU problem isn't prone to T43 series since either they are heatsinked, or there isn't one at all (GMA).

For those that are not up to speed and are following this thread.
Latest T43 ATI Drivers - Version 10.2 / 8.593.100.000
- Release 2010-02-19 [February '10]
- File 10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe
Can be found by Googling the File name.
Need Mobility Modder to install but can not install directly from Windows 10 so you need to Mod file in Windows 7 or XP and then copy to Windows 10. Then install with Compatibility tool for Vista.
I don't recommend to download from Lenovo/Chinese website but each to their own.

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
From the pictures of intel 915GM T43 motherboards, they only have a couple of capacitors on the "GPU" spot.ajkula66 wrote:Also, even the Intel-based T43s have a heatsink covering the chips involved.
And for the driver found on the Chinese Lenovo website, it works straight out of the box either you use Catalyst or .inf file, no mod or vista compatibility tool needed

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Not for nothing, but have you ever opened an Intel-based T43? I have. Hundreds of them. They have a "long" heatsink that is different from the ones found on ATi-based systems, but it IS a long heatsink nevertheless.kfzhu1229 wrote:From the pictures of intel 915GM T43 motherboards, they only have a couple of capacitors on the "GPU" spot.ajkula66 wrote:Also, even the Intel-based T43s have a heatsink covering the chips involved.
Good to know for those intent on running W8.x or W10 on their T43/p units. I don't - and never will - belong to that group. And for the driver found on the Chinese Lenovo website, it works straight out of the box either you use Catalyst or .inf file, no mod or vista compatibility tool needed

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
I tried them but have the same issues ( lag/freezes/display driver stopped to work and recovered )kfzhu1229 wrote:From the pictures of intel 915GM T43 motherboards, they only have a couple of capacitors on the "GPU" spot.ajkula66 wrote:Also, even the Intel-based T43s have a heatsink covering the chips involved.

it's true , they work out-of-the-box , on win 8.1pro ( no mod needed )
catalyst control center wont start though
I would need another overclocking/downclocking software to try downclock the gpu and see if it helps , but can't find a general one or one actually working for the fire gl v3200 at moment
