Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
i've decided to not try the catalyst solution during the week ,as i've gone through blue screens and heavy freeze with the last attempt , i'm afraid to definitely fry the graphic card .
I could make a last attempt next week end when i can do it whit a big fan pointed to the notebok place, or bottom, but since the Ati drivers push more of the graphic card power , of course the gpu is going to run hotter with them ; i will give it a second thought later this week on doing it
the last resort for this t43p ( to avoid the temperature peaks )is, i guess :
-not using ati catalyst drivers at moment
-do not use the t43p on hot days and in any situation in which gpu temp can heat and go over 76
-changing the motherboard with a new one

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
For the stopped working and recovered thing it is definitely your GPU condition to be blamed. My cousin have another Lenovo crap with a newer AMD GPU and Intel CPU which is like the same thing with flashing screen and say recovered but on that machine it gives you bluescreen after that to make matters worse... and for sure that GPU is fried because the screws beside the GPU that holds the heatsink down broke... Never buy any non-ThinkPad lenovos again...
For yours you should do some reballing at some point (I do not think you should sell it and be unkind not to indicate GPU problem) or you can let other experienced users like Realblackstuff to do it
For now, my suggestion is not to use it at all even if it is not fully broken down before it gets fixed...

it couldn't even remotely pass in the very bottom or behind of my mind
i agree i shouldnt use it anymore , i'm setting up a new thinkpad for the job , hopefully ready to do it in a few days

on the ibm logo boot screen , there are tiny weird blue lines between characters , they shouldn't be there .kfzhu1229 wrote:And what do you mean by corrupt?boodi wrote: keep in mind the gpu is most likely defective as also IBM logo startup screen is corrupt , this happened lately in this year
On catalyst drivers , the graphic is much faster but temperature goes through the roof even with basic operations , and the graphic/system/notebook freezes.
On catalyst drivers , the different 3d test windows , on the ccc , carry artifacts all through.
On catalyst drivers -i.e. on google search bar , but anywere - is 30 or more of size . Do not imagine a reason for this .
On microsoft drivers , if temperature stays behind 70/72 , all good .
It doesn't happen frequently lately , it depends on outside world and ambience temperature which in this season are higher
Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Well yeah these symptoms should be GPU degrade & defect. My A30 only have a few lines going through horizontally through the entire screen within the bottom 10 rows of pixels depending on how the screen is angled, so mine is just the connection/LCD defect and I will change it to SXGA+ by some time anyways if I have enough spare budget...boodi wrote:on the ibm logo boot screen , there are tiny weird blue lines between characters , they shouldn't be there .kfzhu1229 wrote: And what do you mean by corrupt?

I think for Microsoft driver it just passes through the card and use your CPU power to do GPU like Intel integrated graphics but at the same time without any optimizations unlike Intel integrated graphics and that is probably why no defection takes place on your GPU in Microsoft driver.
A temporary solution is for you to find a ThinkPad Dock II and attach a PCI (non-express) GPU into its PCI slot (I know it is not easy to find a decent one but I found a Radeon 3450 for $50 and there are also 5450 and one 7350 for around $100 available on eBay). The downside is that you can no longer utilize your SXGA+ or UXGA display equipped with your T43p anymore. Also if you run into low system resource problem I actually have no idea how to solve that as that took place on my T22, T23, and A30 when I plug my 3450 into the PCI slot no matter how many other devices I disable.

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
A new problem raised
finally
Lately the t43 15'' UXGA screen goes blank ..
It always switches on regularly , on boot, then on use , i.e. some graphic activity on screen the screen goes blank
going sleep mode and coming back , the screen returns to live
until it goes blank again
I guess something bad happening ( inverter or lamp .. no visible things when it goes black it seems really black )
at moment i will be using a t61 14'' for work , an r61 15'' is on the upgrade path , using a 1024x768 for the job is not easy life really . .
will try this later

Pull the hard drive out.
Remove the battery and the media drive, unplug the AC adapter.
Press the "power" button 10 times, holding it down for 10 seconds each time and 30 seconds the last time around.
Plug the adapter - but nothing else - back and try to power on.
Good luck.
Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
the trick ( clearly used for other issues ) did nothing
today fn+f7 seems to bring the screen back , at least for some time ( it's rather random whether the screen blanks in seconds , minutes ..or 1 hour .. or so .. now is up from 30minutes and fine )
the whites are not that pink , I would say that after boot the whites are whites

If any pink sign is present, tube replacement is suggested... At least I would feel ashaming using a defective laptop. I know it is not s easy job as I screwed one up before (works but did not assemble properly)

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
in fact I'm not using it apart for tryn/repair purpose
it's likely the t43p is to be considered dead or about now , and I'd need just to sell the thing (case/mainboard+keyboard+screen+memory+cpu), "as it is/ for parts" on ebay now
I'm using a t61p currently , it's quite very unconfortable using 1024x768 for the job ;
on another note i noticed the t61p screen goes blank /backlamp light only sometimes when i plug the ac power, and that times it needs unplug/replug. It Doesn't feel 100$ ac safe.
Will test it with another ac ps

Correct. The chances of one destroying the panel by introducing dust specs within the layers of the LCD are very high.boodi wrote: I read yesterday , the operation is not exactly plug and play , and many failed doing it

Try putting the T43 LCD into T61. They are all compatible except you have to mod the code in T61 to make it work (T/R6x series all share the same cable for same size)boodi wrote:in fact I'm not using it apart for tryn/repair purpose

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
For T4x/R5x computers, they use different screen cables to detect the resolution. For T/R6x, I think they use some kind of code stored in your computer to do so therefore all the cables for the same screen size are the same

BIOS has to recognize and read the EDID chip on the LCD. Most of the T4x/R5x series LCDs don't have such a chip to begin with and will consequently not work with a T/R 6* system. For T/R6x, I think they use some kind of code stored in your computer to do so therefore all the cables for the same screen size are the same

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Well it is still worthy to try... If it works, congrats. If not, get another panel off from ebay. I ended up buying a non-ips non-ibm-original lg-Phillips UXGA panel designed to work in T6x for my T43 brand new for $80 after shipping and still worked fine with less viewing angles and a hotter inverter because i did not upgrade it

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Well if it is the inverter's fault it does not matter, but if it is the CCFL that is dying then i don't think i need it

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Hi All,
Just came across this thread while installing various drivers onto my newly SATA modded T43 with ATI X300 graphics and 14" SXGA+ (1400 x 1050).
1) Video driver
I installed package 1yd302ww / Version 8.343-070209a-043671C for Windows Vista 32-bit that I found at a non-Chinese Lenovo site:
https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/p ... d302ww.exe
https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/p ... d302ww.txt
It looks like the same package kfzhu1229 reported using earlier from a Chinese Lenovo site although I can't see "Catalyst Version 03.00.0608" anywhere in mine - here are my current versions with this package:

Am I any better off moving to that latest and greatest CCC version http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 22#p783122? If so which particular improvements will I see? I don't mind considering an upgrade for a reason even though my graphics as well as CCC itself seem to be working perfectly well.
2) Windows 8.1 and 10 installation
Just out of curiosity really (as I genuinely feel W7 is the best OS ever by MS so far), should any particular steps be taken to install anything higher than W7 on a T4x? After a few attempts to install W8.1 a very long time ago that failed for some reason I read somewhere that PAE support is required for W8.1 or higher, which afaik is not there in the T4x series, so up until this point I was under impression that it's impossible (pardon my ignorance).
Many thanks in advance!

Re: Thinkpad T43p heating
Do you need the latest driver or would you notice any difference upgrading to the latest driver. If I was trying to use a T43 today I would want the latest driver.
File "10-2_legacy_vista32-64_dd_ccc.exe" needs to be modded with "DH Mobility Modder" before you run setup.
So run the file and it will install to C: Drive then mod and then run setup.
Windows 7 is the way to go with the T43 which does have PAE support regardless.
For further Windows 7 install support check the below link.
