Random Screen Shut Down

Yesterday a problem started where the screen of my thinkpad t42p just shuts off. The computer stays on but the screen, including the backlight, shut off. However, sometiems the backlight stays on a little while and then turns off. I run linux on it but have had the problem during bootup so its not linux. Sometiems even after a restart the screen is off. Any help? Please.

I have the opposite problem. At work I listen to mp3's on my laptop but I want to turn the screen off. I use function F3 and the monitor shuts off, but after a few minutes it randomly turns back on. (during this time I am using my work desktop so I figure save the screen) I wonder if these problems are realated.
