Time to ditch Google? New results are utter CRAP.

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Mon Jun 20, 2016 7:25 am

Google is really getting on my nerves.
Their latest search-result layout is the worst I have ever seen!
It's also turned into an enormous vertical and horizontal SPACE WASTER.
Time to ditch that perennial spy Google!

I already was a fan of https://duckduckgo.com
Image

And lately I have also added the interestingly named: http://www.dogpile.com to my favorite bookmarks.

Happy searching!

Dogpile! That's a blast from the past!

In the 90s, my university used to have an "internet resources" page that included a list of search engines (Dogpile, Excite, AltaVista, Lycos, InfoSeek, Webcrawler, Yahoo and a bunch of others), and of course, the obligatory link to Netscape Navigator.

I guess I wasn't the only one complaining about the spy-king space-wasting Google!
Within a day they themselves dumped the new abominable layout and went back to the old(er) version!

Anyone ever use Capernic?

http://www.optimizingpc.com/optimize/co ... earch.html

Many years ago before the world just used Google this app was cool in doing searches using all the other search engines and making up a nice cross checked list.

These days they just do Windows desktop indexing.

I searched M6700 HD8970m
The first page is completely f***ing irrevalent

And for search recommendations, I got

Searches related to M6700 HD8970m

dell precision m6700 specs
dell precision m6700 price
dell precision m6700 review
dell precision m6700 core i7
dell precision m6700 price in india
dell m6700 ebay
dell precision m6700 amazon
dell precision m6700 manual

Also try to search NCS8801 (It's the chip which Javi used in the converter kit) and I mean, just look at the first page

Odd, I just repeated your two queries and I get very relevant results, even when I logout of my google account? For the most part, Google search has worked great for me.

odd maybe because I am using a firefox add on google redirects fixer?
And in my definition finding information about GTX 680m/780m is not related information to HD8970m.

And for the NCS8801, the first page is almost all purchase links

Entering just "NCS8801" into Google, the first hit is from the manufacturer:

http://www.newcosemi.com/index.php/Hi-D ... 15/12.html

Poking around their site, it does not seem to have any obvious links to download a datasheet (that's what I'm assuming you mean by "specification"). Yes, the second hit from the Google search is indeed from baidu.com. However, if you click on it, it does provide you with a 3 page preliminary datasheet.

http://wenku.baidu.com/view/3c210b6cb52 ... ml?re=view

The post appears to be 2 years old. Continuing on, the third hit is from the eevblog.com forum:

http://www.eevblog.com/forum/microcontr ... ly-bypass/

Here, the poster is asking for confirmation that the NCS8801 "typical application" calls out for a number of capacitors and inductors. His last sentence is a link to a 12 page datasheet, last updated in April 2014, that has been posted to a Dropbox account:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/639 ... t_V1p1.pdf

If you were indeed looking for a (fairly) current datasheet, Google found it for you within the first three hits. If you absolutely need the latest version, then contact the manufacturer found in the first Google hit.

I think that in this case, that's to be expected. The device was designed by a "fabless" company in China. That's probably why all of the baidu, alibaba, and aliexpress references show up. My guess is that it's a very unique part that is not manufactured by any other company; i.e., a proprietary design. You might be able to eliminate some of those references by adding "-baidu -alibaba -aliexpress" to your search string and then keeping adding terms to ignore as they pop up.

Another thing that sometimes works (but not in this case), is to add: filetype:pdf to the search string. It assumes that whatever you are looking for is available in an Adobe Acrobat file format.
