T41 screen marks from trackpad buttons

#1 Post by Terry » Mon Jun 21, 2004 1:44 pm

I have a new T41. After 3 weeks of use, I notice the trackpad keys are leaving an impression (marks; scratches that don't come off) on the LCD panel. I asked IBM tech re. this & he had me reseat my keyboard. No help. He said I could send the unit in but they'd probably refuse repair under warranty, saying I damaged it by putting books or something heavy on top. Not so. I baby this unit when I travel. It's in its own padded case in my briefcase with very stiff notebook covers on both sides. Anyone else encountering this problem?

I have seen those impressions on my T41. I am fairly certain it is from pressure in my briefcase, because there are no marks if I am not carrying it.

I find the marks are residue from finger oils, and in my case, they come off completely with the use of Windex and a very soft cloth. So after cleaning, if I open and close it several times (say on the weeked) but don't transport it, there are no fresh marks.

I now carry the laptop in a different way in my briefcase and reduce the pressure. The marks are now quite infrequent. I have seen these marks on Dell laptops, and had not seen them on my IBM laptops until I got to the T41.

Well I have never heard of it leaving permanent scars after only 3 weeks
Try using a screen cleaner liquid.
I have heard of them leaving marks but nothing permanent in such a short time.

I had the same problem with my T40, the bumps on the middle trackpad key left indentations on my screen. In retrospect, I think my enthusiasm to protect my Thinkpad actually contributed to the problem. I always put my laptop in a form fitting padded case that had a wide velcro strap over the opening. When my laptop was in my bag along with books and everything else, I think the velcro scrap caused uneven pressure on the top of the laptop, causing the indentations. I tried to get them out using a screen cloth, but to no avail. My classmates that never used padded cases and just put their Thinkpads into their bags never had any of the same problems. That padded case could be the source of your problems...just make sure you aren't putting any undue pressure on the top of the screen.

There was an earlier thread on a similar issue (trackpoint leaving marks), in which someone suggested using the radtech "screensaverz" protector. I haven't noticed a marking problem on my T42 yet, but I've bought one and started using it preventively. I just slip it over the keyboard whenever I close the cover.

Note the "Mac" and "PC" options for a correct fit - I got the PC 14"-17" size for my 14.1".

I had my blue UltraNav button and TrackPoint leaving marks on my screen until I put a dustless cloth on the keyboard while travelling. Haven't had a problem since.
