T42 - BATTERIES NOT CHARGING / NOT WORKING FROM AC EITHER

My T42 is a real pain. The laptop does not seem to function from the AC adaptor (which is brand new), it only seems to work from the battery. However when the battery runs down I then cannot recharge it. I have 67% life left in the battery so really need a quick solution which will not drain the remaining life.

Any help / advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

sounds like a hardware issue..
have you called the local support center..?

i would suggest, if there is a *good* serviceing dealer or service center, close to you that you drive the T42 there..
rather than send it in for depot repair..

things i would check:
AC adapter actually works..
no damage to the socket in the back of the T42..
any heat coming from the socket..? i.e. is the connection good..?
does the little light com on when the T42 is plugged into the AC adapter..?

I bought a brand new AC adaptor and battery so am confident these are fine. There is no damage to the socket on back and no heat .. connection is also good.
There are no lights lit up when the T42 is plugged into AC adaptor and not switched on. When you switch the machine on then the battery and circle with z stay on but the machine will not function from the AC or charge the battery. I have tried with and without docking station.

Could there be a fuse blown on the system board? Is this a motherboard problem, or a simple download missing? Don't know if the embedded controller and bios update will help?

I might just put the T42 in the bin as it is a pain.

So have you called IBM support? It does not sound like there is an easy fix. There is no point to try to mess with it yourself when IBM has full time well trained professional technical staff ready to help you. Throwing the thinkpad into a DHL box is just as easy.
