quality of latest t-series? what to buy after t430?

#1 Post by m-blue » Mon Jul 18, 2016 3:07 am

Hi,
I am using 3 years old t430 and... That is worst t-series I ever had. I started at t40 (all models of T series) and until this one there was no quality problems... at t430 I have loose on screen after less than one year, after two a few buttons on keyboard are white battery works little more than one hour - after one year...
At this moment I want to change t430 to something new... wondering about t550, but how is this one - is it better quality? Or it is better to go at x1 way, but I like to have possibility to change something inside, or just clean it...
Regards,

Good news is that after x30, next lines (x40, x50 and now x60) all have a slightly better keyboard layout-wise. But may have less key travel. I don't own any of these - my sister has recently bought a X260 but it's I haven't even seen the machine personally. Heard it's very good though. Generally what what I've read on reddit people were very fond of t450s or T450 for that matter. You want to visit (reddit.com/r/thinkpad) and shoot questions there. Of course, let's wait for other colleagues to take voice here too:)

The newer post t430 t-series has much better build quality in general than the t410-t430 era of laptops. It won't match your t40, but it is not far off.

That could have just been bad luck on the T430. The T4x machines were thin and looked great, but were not particularly stout.

I don't know what you're looking to spend, but I'd vote for the T450s or T460(s) with the FHD IPS screen. It will give you a much better screen, which is a very tangible benefit.

At now I am looking for t450S ( wondering to buy bigger than 14" screen) but 14 is compact so better resolution is solution for small desktop:), and I am almost sure that next will be 14 with fhd. I was wondering to change t430 for something new and not lenovo, but since t40 I can't use nothing else like trackpoint:) So it is only lenovo and dell, dell - I never like it, so I have to find lenovo:) Today I spend some time to see x1, t450/ t460, and s... Only one problem will be second hdd,now I have primary hdd and second in ultrabay... ssd 500Gb will cost too much:) so I think will be time to clean hdd... I hope after some time new T.. will work better than t430.

If you want the Ultrabay, the T440p is the last 14" Thinkpad to ever sport one, however if you want to hot-swap drives you would need to open the machine, not as easy as the previous generations. Just a note on the T440p heat dissipation, if you go with the Core i7, the processor tends to heat and it emerges upwards to the keyboard and left palmrest so it's really uncomfortable to use.

T450/T460 uses low wattage processors (15watts vs 47watts on the T440p), so heat problems are almost non-existent. If you go with the standard T460 you get more dissipation compared to the slim chassis on the T460s. The T460s beats T460 in slimness, weight, and the WQHD panel with higher gamut.

I own both a T450 and T460 and I find a really joy to use machines.

I just got a new-to-me T530 off ebay for about $250 shipped with 8 gigs of RAM, a 500 gig HD, an i5 cpu, fresh win7 pro. I'm loving this laptop surprisingly much. The keyboard is great, no goofy numpad to clutter things up, and the touchpad has actual buttons and is a joy to use. Very pleasantly surprised.
