T440 crash

#1 Post by hhmcsv » Tue Jul 19, 2016 10:21 am

My usually very stable and crisp t440 ran into a serious problem.
Desktop screen was blinking in and out, and no action would stop it. So I did a hard shutdown (holding the power button pressed). But after startup, the blue BSOD-screen appeared with different possible remedy actions, but none of these gave any result.
So onto the desktop of my wife, obtaining a fresh Media Creation Tool and using this to make a completely fresh installation of Win 10.
But before that, I wanted to salvage as much of the content of the HDD as possible, so using the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) I took the HDD out of the T440, mounted it in a usb-enclosure to save what I wanted.
After the fresh install, it was just putting everything back in place and intstalling all apps and programs - a time-consuming job!
So what was the cause of all that? Prior to the crash, the Windows Update had tried to install the KB3172985 update, which after several attempts did not install. And many othe users has reported various problems with this update. I cannot prove that this was actually the cause, but I would definitely call it the prime suspect!
But success after all, a fresh install is always good, and certain functions seem to work better. One is the Hotspot function, which before was difficult to get working, but now it works flawlessly.

After this crappy Windows 10 experience (no doubt the first of many more to come...), it's time to change your {b]signature[/b]
from: All now running Win10 - no issues :D
to : All now running Win10 - wish I'd never done it!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
