x220, i upgraded to sandisk ssd ultra ii, 960gb and it's not great

#1 Post by geometro95 » Fri Jul 22, 2016 9:19 pm

i cloned my hitachi drive and installed the ssd, and it isn't great. i thought it would be faster, but it hangs here and there.

to focus the problem: i can watch a youtube video no problem, but streaming amazon is very glitchy (stop start) and streaming netflix is glitchy with slomo draggy sounds.

i ran diagnostics and the drive passes. i chatted with a rep at sandisk and he was no use. he suspected my wifi, but there's nothing wrong there. i swapped the hitachi back in and i can stream anything.

but my computer is getting very hot, and it was a lot cooler with the ssd. the whining (do we all havwe that?) might be worse also with the hdd.

i have 16 gigs ram.

any ideas? is the ssd defective and i should try again? i updated to windows 10 pro on it and couldn't solve the problem.

any help, thanks

thanks.

Do a clean install as opposed to cloning the previous installation.

SSDs are fundamentally different from HDDs, and have their own set of quirks.

One of them is partition alignment http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... brief.html
Daily driver: X220 4291-P79 i5-2520M

In reserve: X61 T7500, X60 T2300
In pieces: X60s CS U1300 [board only], two retired but working X61Ts
RIP: 760XD 9546-U9E

Yes, this is a big deal. It can't have been merely cloned, the clone needed to have been partitioned as an SSD. SSD-aware cloning software should have had that as a selection or switch.
