How to remove rapid restore backup

#1 Post by pej2000 » Sun Jun 12, 2005 9:55 am

Can anyone guide me to a post on how to do this? I'd like to free up some disc space and can't seem to find out how to do it; what file to delete etc.

Also I notice in the software that if I try to exclude files from the backup the software shows an empty directory as if the harddisc were empty..

Thanks for any suggestions.

just go through the process as though you're doing a manual backup (start the R&R program, choose backup now and select delete backups on the button on the lower left.

Do you want to remove the IBM HPA (hidden partition) also? The HPA takes up 3-4MB on your HDD. I know how to do it if you want to format the HDD and start over but it gets tricky (read beyond my knowledge/experience) without risking the rest of the drive.

Maybe someone else can suggest how.

FYI, You are supposed to be able to unhide the HPA in the IBM PreBoot Area

If you want to format the whole drive, Fdisk can't access the HPA. I don't think that Partition Magic can fix the problem either. Linux Cfdisk can. Then you need to run the IBM/Hitachi Drive Feature Tool to get back 3-4MB hidden free space.

I think you have a typo there, the HPA is actually more like 3-4GB not MB.

Thanks for all the responses.

WHen I run RR and go to restore files and folders, there is a delete button on the right lowe corner which is grayed out. Checking the backup file under 3. or "delete unneeded files" under 4. doesn't give me access to the Delete button.

Any ideas?

For now I think I'm not brave enough to mess with partitions and Fdisk. I have a 50-60Gig drive and only 10Gig free space. Trying to figure out if the backup is hogging the disc.

THanks
Again

By the was I am using Rapid restore ultra 4.0 if that makes a difference. Should I remove and reinstall it? It seems very quirky.

I think I might have misunderstood. Are you trying to remove the program or just some backups?
If only backups, can you view all your backups from the main windwow (choose 'back up now' and then look for the link 'view all backups' under the heading 'most recent backup'.

Thanks for your response.

Yes, at least for now I'd just like to remove the backup, mainly to see how much space its taking up. If it's too much I'll start backing up to another device.

I can see the backup(there's only one) following your instructions, but I don't see a way to delete it.

If there's only one backup, that would mean you have just one base backup taken on the date shown. Can you not select it (check the box beside the backup) and delete it?

No I don't see a delete button on the View backups window.

If I go to restore files there is a delete button, but it remains "grayed out" no matter what I do.

Maybe you are not allowed to delete the Base backup?

the old R&R or RR4 versions didn't come with delete buttons. You must do a new backup, and when the window appears where you select the backup location just deselect all checkboxes. If you go on you get asked if you want to delete all backups.

Thanks for the response. Can I update RR4?
Hoping maybe there is a fix for not being able to exclude files.

By the way do people prefer the Rescue and Recovery software to the Rapid Restore Ultra?

I'm a little confused that IBM has 2 packages that sound like they do the same thing.

Wow, thanks that bought me 14Gigs. Amazing that they would design such a simple thing like this....like unraveling the Davinci code.

As far as I'm concerned, backing up data to the same physical device is not backing up. If you get a disk crash, you've got no backup.

I can't see why anyone would bother either unless it's being used as a secondary backup.

Agreed! Most of the times that I've had to do a restore was when I had a HDD crash. Why would I want to waste time backing up to something as fragile and suceptable to failure as a Laptop HDD?
