Newegg and/or Tigerdirect have an interesting policy on laptops, I never read it, but I know there's a special thing there, warranty is the manufacturer, or exchange for same item only or something. Read it and figure it out, but I'd say return it.
Most of the people here report no dead pixels, so you're probably better off trying another machine.

SONY Customer Service/Tech Support: 1-888-4SONYPC (476-6972)
Toshiba Customer Service/Tech Support: 1-800-457-7777
What I've found so far w/ my T41:
1. Two (2) dead pixels. (I found them w/ Deadpix software that i got form Jim Hope webpage.
2. Battery rattling badly.
3. And the worst thing---- In the very front of the Access IBM key, in a perpendicular direction towards the LCD, i've found a "bulb" or protuberance ( I don't know the exact word). And also, I've found that "bulb" right above the parallel port. And...to complete this frustration, looking from the back side, having the parallel port at your right, besides this gap that everyone is reporting here in this topic, i've found on the left that there is a mismatch between the LCD and the laptop case. It's about 2mm. If somebody can tell me how to post pictures here, I will do it.
So, i don't know. Besides these issues, the machine is working perfeclty, full performance, it's so great!!! I don't know if this police will cover exchange for these problems, or if I'll do better calling IBM directly.
I'd appreciate any advise from you guys,
K

An update for anyone who is interested:
I received my 2379-DXU today. I had previously returned 2 2378-FVUs because of the "bulge". Well, the new one has it, too, although somewhat less in magnitude. But I have decided to keep it, it would appear they are all like this, or at least many of them, it is not easy to say it is defective.
One item that seems different, is when plugged in, the battery guage only goes up to 96%. Anyone else have this issue?
Other than the bulge, the unit seems solid and the 15" screen is very nice. This unit has the fast hard drive and bluetooth, so I am set, for a while at least...

The settings are set to start at 96%, stop at 100%. They are the default and think they are OK. It turns out it charges better when plugged in directly to the charger, not when connected to the mini-dock. There must be a little voltage drop in the mini-dock. As Rosanne Rosanna Danna would say "It just goes to show, it's always something!".
