SOLD: AMD Radeon RX480 4GB $190+shipping

#1 Post by RMSMajestic » Thu Aug 25, 2016 11:31 pm

FS is an almost brand new XFX Radeon RX480, 4GB edition
it's one of the first batch that does NOT have backplate,
but being one of the first few batches also opens up the possibility of unlocking vRAM from 4GB to 8GB.
read here for details: https://www.techpowerup.com/223913/amd- ... enchmarked

But I do not hold any promise for that, since there's no way for me to check the vRAM type without void the warranty

Selling because it doesn't have a backplate

dang your scaly hide, RMS, where were you 2 weeks ago when I bought a cheap R7 370 so that my tired old desktop could play No Man's Sky?

people, for now it's still tough to find any RX at all, unless you're willing to shell out like USD299-399. they were supposed to be around 100, but that's not quite happening yet. maybe by year's end?

altho, non-backplate, :( altho' some reviews were saying it traps more heat than it dissipates, so maybe that's a good thing after all?

but the possible-memory thing is interesting! my R7 is 4GB, but only because it oddly cost much less than the same brand/model in 2GB lol. but from what I've read, supposedly the RAM size is not that important, more about the bandwidth - which the RX definitely has. and also should have the 14nm FinFET which is just nuts how small and low-power the die sizes are getting. altho early reference 480s were technically in violation of PCIe power consumption? so, ymmv?

sorry for rambling and not buying :P - somebody buy this, it's a good deal and an excellent card and we all know what a decent and respected thinkpadder RMS is.
go away.

lol I only got it last week. for exactly $190.
It's just a matter of time, after just a few month, price will return to normal and I'm pretty sure I can wait for that with my HD7970.
Also quite often I move around graphics cards so the backplate is certainly a MUST for me. And unless the backplate is made of plastic, just throw a few thermal pads in and it will definitely help.

The only "demanding" game I play is World of Warships, which is not demanding at all. (cos the pathetic me has 3D vertigo)

reason why I wanna get a new GPU is that the HD7970 I have (Vapor-X) takes 2.5 slots of space and also with it's height I can't put the GPU brackets of my thinkstation D30 in, which is quite annoying cos I still need to find space to store the removed bracket. And also after I got a new GPU I can throw the HD7970 in my EXP GDC set up.

vRAM is very important if you are running on high resolution or doing come computing with GPU. For 1920*1080 gaming, 4GB is more than enough.

I'm not an AMD fanboy, but just to say, it's easier to undervolt/underclock your graphics card, than to fix the 3.5GB vRAM on GTX970, or to fix the problem nVIDIA had in the old NVS140m/FX570m/FX3700m/8600m GT

BTW, maybe I should have put some $250+ for it. last night I listed it for $225 on feebay and it was gone in 1 hour >_<
