Is OpenGL video the only real difference in 'P' model

#1 Post by jjlists123 » Sun Jun 12, 2005 6:17 pm

I'm looking at the specs in tabook.pdf and it looks to me that the OpenGL certification is the only real difference in 'P' model Thinkpads?
The prices on 'P' models is significantly higher. If I don't need OpenGL, is there any other reason to lay down the extra cash for a 'P' model?

Also the 1600x1200 screen. Sometimes 9 cell battery, 7200rpm hdd, dvd-writer depending on models.

do you use it for gaming or 3d graphing? If not, that's not necessary.

p also gives you twice the video memory and usually the fingerprinter reader, bluetooth, wifi, etc. When you have see a 'p' model you know it's fairly well loaded.

I have a non-p T42 and its got a fingerprint reader, bluetooth, wifi, 7200RPM HD. So I'm guessing it does have something to do with the 1600x1200 screen and the openGL vid-card oh and maybe a 9-cell be default.

The ONLY thing you can't get on a T43 that the T43p's have is the 128MB VL3200 graphics card w/1600x1200 screen and the absolute fastest PM 2.13ghz (T43's top out at PM 2.0ghz). Everything else, including 7200rpm hdd can be configured/upgraded from IBM on most regular T43's.

At least for me, it's extremely difficult to justify the extra $1000 for a marginal jump in CPU speed (2.0 vs 2.13ghz) and the VL3200. The VL3200 only adds about $300 to the cost of the laptop. I'd be all over a T43p if it came with a 2.0ghz cpu & 512MB ram, which would easily knock a good $500 off MSRP.

You'd be all over a 2687EJU
T43p 2687EJU, 512+512 ram, 2ghz, 15 in UXGA, V3200, MultiBurn, ect.

Yes I would, if I could only get it with a 14" screen.

Don't game on this laptop ..

#9 Post by systemBuilder » Sun Jun 26, 2005 5:18 am

I have a T40 with radeon 7500 graphics card. Guess what? It cannot even start FarCry.

It seems to me that for $700 you can get an excellent generic 3-D gaming PC with a GeForce 6600GT card and it will be about 4-7 times faster than any IBM thinkpad available, with a better mouse, keyboard, etc. I don't see what is the point of trying to game on a thinkpad when IBM just doesn't give a hoot about gamers or gaming. In fact, IBM doesn't give a hoot about graphics since thinkpads have always been marked by slow graphics; if IBM cared about gaming they would offer the V5000 chipset which is 3x faster than the V3200 chipset, with 3x the pixel pipelines and 4x the shaders and 4x the memory bandwidth, if i recall correctly.

Anyway, save your pennies, buy a low-end thinkpad and get a REAL gaming PC that can be upgraded and is already 4-7x faster than the thinkpad, that's my advice.

I imagine you're (systemBuilder) talking about a Desktop, not a laptop. :o

And yes, Thinkpads are made for get the work done, totally agree. But still, you can play a game now and then, not the latest and/or greatest ones in an older ATI 7500. Quake III for instance is OK in mine. Right now I'm trying to get Doom 3 Demo to play on it. Still very slow, but I'm working on it.

And I hope you're talking about a homebuilt desktop, not those prebuilts. Because Dell will offer you intergrated graphics at that price(They usually don't have a AGP/PCI-E slot)
eMachines will offer you a decent system you "CAN" upgrade actually
PS - My TP ran HL2 on medium-semi low settings (T43 2687DDU).
Edit - 10 FPS, still playable. This is on 1280x1024 resolution as well windowed. This isn't even the P model either. And the trackpoint is a godly aiming tool if you compare it to a TOUCHPAD. You touch, drag, drag more... Then attempt to shoot someone. NOPE! Miss. You're dead.

V5000 only got double score as V3200 got in 3dmark03. so i don't think it's "3x faster" tho.
I am so confuse why IBM doesn't use v5000 on t43p; if there's a heat problem, v5000 got lower working temperature than v3200. so maybe price problem?

I overclocked ATI 7500 from 258.75/182.25 by a 25% to 310.5/218.7 using radLinker and still Doom 3 start but get freez, with the only option of "kill it" with task manager. Although it's possible to see some performance, isn't good enough to make it playable. I'll keep trying, but I don't see any light...
Thx,
K.

Are you serious? That is pretty low... are you sure it was 2003 and not 2005?
