R32 fails to detect both RAM slots at startup

#1 Post by Mac Workin » Fri Sep 23, 2016 9:59 am

the R32 beeps 1-3-3-1 when i powered it up on the first try, on the second try, it oddly worked. is there something wrong with the RAM or its just the slots not making contact?

the 2x1GB Hynix DDR333 PC2700 modules dont seem to look as if they had some dirt blocking the contacts, same as the RAM sockets too. (keep in mind i did also try to switch the RAM modules around)

Given the reputation that R32 had as a "problem child" even when they were new, I'd suspect a slot/motherboard issue. Its contemporaries - A31/p and even more so T30 - were prone to this type of failure.

Did you try one DIMM at one slot at the time?

woah... i find it hard to believe that apart from the T30, the RAM slot problem too exists in my R32?!
as for the one DIMM at one slot, i haven't tried it yet. but i'll try if it changes anything.

If you search the forum, you'll find out that these machines were regarded as quite temperamental and that the QC - not really surprising since they were built by Acer and not IBM - left an awful lot to be desired.

Give it a shot, let us know and we'll take it from there...

Good luck.

that left me kind of shocked, the palmrest on the R32 doesn't have any noticeable flex but creaks a little?

looks like the R32 does not like the Hynix module in the slot which doesn't have a black cover underneath it, in the other slot which has it, worked. i tried a combo of 2x512MB DDR333 PC2700 modules that i kept long ago, and it detected both of the 512MB modules without beeping.

i'm guessing the Hynix modules are the problem?

There's more to the picture than meets the eye when it comes to QC...a *lot* more...

Maybe.

Two questions:

a) What happens when you insert 1GB + 512MB ?

b) Do you have the latest BIOS installed ?

it surprisingly boots up properly without any beeps, eugh, now i might have to buy another 1GB module because of this.

yes, 2.16 - 1MET97WW isn't it?

Well, these are quite inexpensive nowadays...
