Why wont Windows 95/98 work with 760EL?

#1 Post by vwthink » Mon Jun 13, 2005 5:45 am

I have a ThinkPad 760EL (P133, 32MB, 1.08GB) and am trying to get either Win95 or Win98 to install. Due to the ultrabay only accepting the floppy or the CDROM at any one time, I installed DOS 6.22 with a CD driver to be able to install windodws. All goes smoothly until rebooting for the first time into windows (either version), and then I get the following message: "The compression driver cannot be set up correctly. Get a version from your vendor that is compatible with this version of windows".

I've tried installing the BIOS update, and it only hung up during install. I now have intermittent access to the BIOS via the F1 key. Is there something I'm missing? I've never had these dramas with any other PC before.

BIOS Data:
Power management version 1.06
BIOS version 1.07
Video version 1.00
Setup version 1.13
Slave controller version 1.08

I've had bad luck trying to mix the files from different versions of Microsoft operating systems, so I can understand why the DOS 6.22 files cause a problem with WIN95/98. My Thinkpad 365x doesn't even have a CD ROM, so I got around the problem with a parallel port CD ROM. It comes with a bootable floppy disk that loads the CD drivers. Then you take that diskette out, and put in the WIN95/98 setup floppy and it works fine. Maybe someone else has a good solution, but if not, I might suggest you look for a (used) parallel port CD ROM. It's saved me many times!

As for your BIOS problem, sorry, I don't know...

Try this, you'll need a Win98 boot floppy (for Win98). You have your C: drive bootable with DOS 6.2, right? Boot with the Win98 boot floppy and execute sys /C: from the a: prompt. This should transfer the system files to the C: drive. Copy over smartdrv or whatever it's called (it's been a while). Check that your config.sys file still points to the CD driver. Remove floppy and reboot.

I don't know if this will work, but it's what I'd try first.

(Actually, what I'd really do first is to boot the computer form the Win98 floppy and format the C: drive with a system transfer, that would for sure make Win98 happy with it. The problem with that is that you'd have to copy the CD driver file to the C: drive and edit your config.sys file to point to it properly, which could be a little tricky if you dont have a nice DOS editor on a floppy somewhere).

Anyway, good luck.

That's actually what I did, I formatted from the Windows 98 floppy, and now I'm stuck. How and what do we do to the config.sys file to get it to work?

(Sorry for making my first post a request in the middle of a thread, but it seemed appropriate.)
