Windows ME, no sound on T42? Edit: Success

I wanted to try Windows ME on my ThinkPad T42 (comparing it with 98SE), all the drivers are working fine other than sound; I receive the error "The NTKERN.VXD, MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code 2)" under the SoundMax with a yellow triangle

Oddly, with Windows ME on a T43 the sound works but I can't seem to get it to work under ME on the T42, I tried upgrading the DirectX to 9.0c and installing necessary updates (IE6, WMP9, etc.) Any ideas on what to try?

Edit: Apparently, the T30/A31 driver works fine under 98SE/ME on T4x models (tested by me); something must have been broken in the last versions of the SoundMax package provided by IBM/Lenovo, hope this helps anyone else trying to get Windows 98SE or ME working on a T40/T41/T42
