X230 Tablet Backlit keyboard not working

#1 Post by MrBensonhurst » Sat Oct 01, 2016 10:08 pm

Hello all, I recently ordered a backlit keyboard (FRU 04X1240 0C01923) and installed it in my X230 Tablet. It's definitely the backlit model, the backplate is black plastic and the secondary functions on the keys are white like they should be. It didn't appear to work, (all the keys were detected, but the backlight wouldn't illuminate) so I returned it to the seller and they tested a new one in an X230 Tablet then sent it to me as a replacement. It also didn't work, so I'm guessing it's an issue with my machine in some way.

In Windows, pressing FN+Space makes the backlight indicator appear as if it was illuminated, but it isn't. In Linux, nothing happens, even with ACPI methods. I also believe that if it worked correctly, it would flash on and off when the system boots, and it doesn't do this either.

I've tried resetting the BIOS settings, reinstalling drivers in Windows, etc. Could it be a hardware problem with my machine where it can't supply power to the backlight? Or possibly a BIOS problem where it's not detecting the backlighting?

You have done what i was going to suggest about resetting the BIOS, assuming your correct the machine thinks it has a backlit kb do you have a damaged/contaminated connector block? Maybe simply not pressing connector home firmly enough.

Where are you located? Assuming the US is your FRU quoted the same as 04W3063 which is listed on the x230 tablet pdf listed at

The connector looks fine physically. I've tried disconnecting it and reconnecting it several times, so I don't think that's the issue.

In the US, yeah.

It looks fine. What would it look like if blown?

It may look fine and be destroyed at the same time. You need a multimeter to measure it.
