T400 no slic

#1 Post by blink » Sat Oct 01, 2016 10:23 pm

Hi, I have a t400 with no slic showing in slic toolkit. I tried to update the bios & it made no difference.
It comes from a batch of 4 i bought with supervisor passwords. I got this one removed as it was the best cosmetically.Could this be the reason why? As i couldnt do the job myself sold the others on spares/repairs.
I tried to load o/s from recovery discs but as no slic it says not genuine. I am not too bothered but if i wanted to sell on would like to rectify this if possible. Any Suggestions?
Thanks

It means that that T400 didn't come with WIndows preinstalled. There should be a WIndows COA sticker somewhere on the underside of the unit. If there's a COA sticker but no SLIC, then it means that the board was replaced with one that didn't have a SLIC.

The solution is to find and flash a no-whitelist BIOS that also has SLIC.

Thanks for your reply. There is no coa sticker on it, there wasnt on any of them. Got them cheap & they were all like that so no big deal.
Obviously couldnt check the others. However i was wondering if it was because i sent this one away to have supervisor password removed that caused it? If i have to purchase a coa fair enough i can load vanilla 7 on. Just think the lenovo load looks better.
Thanks
edit: so if i can find a non whitelist bios with slic it should be ok? Is that risky? TBH thinking about it will probably get passed onto a family member as is. Dont want to risk bricking it. If there is an easy fix fine

Vanilla Windows 7 is better because there's no preinstalled bloatware.

:D Yeah i was always of that opinion & always put it on for myself but have grown to quite like the lenovo install recently
lol.
Perhaps i just never liked it on the pre win 7 machines. WIFI seemed a real faff. On the 7 ones with 'enhanced' experience i quite enjoy it at the mo.

I used a slic and no whitelist bios from bios-mods.com by user "killer" for some T500s and it worked fine with Winplash, nothing's gotten bricked yet. I'd give it a shot if you can find one for T400.

Many Thanks again for all your suggestions & the link RBS.
I will give it a go. Is it just a case of installing through windows using the .exe file as i did when i updated?
I have also noticed some references on here to booting from a cd to update/change bios.
If you can do both? Would that be a 'safer' option.
Thankyou

Yes, booting from the CD is the safer option.

Lenovo has a BIOS update that has the win 7 slic in it. It also has the infamous whitelists for wifi cards, so if you want to use a non-lenovo wifi, you are better off with the link from RBS, but if you keep the original wifi card, the latest Lenovo BIOS update should be all you need. It's right on Lenovo's support web site. and Yes I prefer updating BIOS from a CD.

I like the lenovo power manager and system update. The access connections is ok. Some of the telemetry stuff I can do without.

In the mod bios after unzipping i have 2 folders 7UET94WW & 7UET95WW it says flash from dos but im not sure how to do that or which one to use? Im kinda in 2 minds if i should bother as this machine is being given to my uncle anyway & he wont be bothered but i guess it would be nice if in another year or 2 i upgrade him again & sell it on?

Thanks I presume i installed the latest bios from lenovo but still no slic table. it wouldnt do through system update (no packages were found) but i downloaded & updated manually from the .exe. Im not bothered about the wifi whitelist he actually hooks up tethered via his mobile phone & the card in it worked well for my needs. However if the mod is not too risky & will install the slic i may do it. Thanks
:D Oh answered my query about the bios version it says 3.24 7UET94WW Is that the latest lenovo version?
Thanks

Check your BIOS Version in the BIOS, one starts with 7Uxxxx (for T400 with 1394/Firewire), the other with 7Vxxxx (no Firewire).
Only use the matching BIOS update/flash.
3.24/3.25 is the latest.

Many Thanks RBS. Yes i added to the end of my last post that it is 3.24 7UET94WW, I guess that is the latest lenovo one?
If i wanted to update with the hacked one will it definitely add the slic? Also any tips on how to do from a CD. Do i need a hard drive installed as i have now removed it & am using on something else at the moment. Was going to put the HDD from my uncles T60 in when i upgraded him.
Thanks
