T43p noisy fan, [censored] it... SOS!!

#1 Post by stalin » Mon Jun 13, 2005 1:44 pm

Hello guys,

I can't beleive I'm the only "lucky" one, who has received a TP with a noisy fan. My CPU temp stays constantely at 50/51C level and the fan is always on. When I start off the notebook, it is fine till 46C, then I the fan gets started and spoils all the positive impression, it just drives me crazy... Considering the fact, it is the second T43p I have received... (the first one 14" I have sent back and in return ordered the another one - 15", the same "feature", [censored])
Any advice/help/etc would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

Dmitry

I think something many users are overlooking is ambient room temperature. Comfortable air-conditioned temperatures can vary up to 10-12 degrees F depending on which part of the world you’re in. Here in the states, it's pretty safe to assume that most businesses stay between ~68-74F, whereas in other countries, normal indoor temperature can be ~78-82F, some even higher in the summer.

A couple degrees difference in ambient air temp can change the cpu temperature & the laptops cooling efficiency EXPONENTIALLY. I've noticed this with desktops & especially laptops.

For example, the ATI Radeon 9500Pro in my tower is air-cooled and has a built-in thermal sensor. By lowering my room temperature from 74F to 72F, the GPU & Ram temperatures on the video card drop almost 10 degrees F.

The Managing Pentium-M Speed/Voltage with software thread/sticky might very well solve your temp/fan problem.

I did have a hope it might help, it didn't :(
I set it to 6x 0.700 - no change (well 49C do not make me feel happier).
As I read the recently posted reviews, the people did not have such an experience... did they? I know such a problem existed in T42p though, which was corrected by a BIOS update. Can't wait for it, I feel kinda [censored] off...

Read the other threads, those with the quiet systems reported having a certain bios that maybe yours doesn't have. I think they said they have a bios that isn't listed online yet.

Ha? Would you give me a link, pls. I've spent half an hour already trying to find those posts, in vain. Thanks in advance.

PS: In order to avoid the misunderstanding - all the drivers, bios version and the like are up-to-date on my machine.

My T43p is constantly at 59C, and while the fan is on and the ambient temperature here 64F (dad likes to have the AC making this house into an igloo), the fan isn't that bad. I've met units that are so much worse. The bottom of the T43p also doesn't get that hot; I can definitely use it while on the go. I haven't undervolted yet but I will soon, but I'm quite satisfied with how the fan is working.

Is that with playing doom3 or just surfing web? Is cpu on adaptive? 59'C sounds on the high side to me.

The T43p I received was extremely noisy, the difference between it and my T42 was night and day. The fan would remain constant when on AC power, it was better when on battery power. It would also rev very often sounding like a wind tunnel!

stalin, did you say a new bios fixed the noisy fan issue?

not for me :(
New BIOS Version (14.06.05) fixes some start up/speed problems. The fan sucks as usual... One of the guys was writing smth about unreleased BIOS version or whatever, I think it is BS.

looks like t43 got some heating problem

#12 Post by keku » Tue Jun 14, 2005 1:46 pm

My brand new t43P also get really really hot ... even I can feel on keyboard. This temp kicks the fan and it's just keep getting on and off very 30 secs or so.
:x I upgraded to ThinkPad from Dell becasue of this heating issue ... but so far T43 is worse than my old dell. :(

Set the Power Management settings to 'balanced/adaptive' and u'll be alright (don't forget about BIOS settings). The thing which pisses me off is the fact, that for the price I have paid for the machine I would be able to get practically 2 Dells... and IBM sales personnel was singing all the time, how wonderfull and suitable the brand new T43p will be for me.... m#$% f#$#s
I have reported a problem one week ago, no email, no call back since then... pffff

normally my thinkpad just working under 44'C with "ThinkPad Default", But of course i have the "Centrino hardware control" on. And the maximum temperature is 64'C. Never get higher than this temperature.

In BIOS I have the following settings:

Config -> Power:

Intel(R) SpeedStep techn. [enabled]
Mode for AC [ Automatic]
Scheme for AC [Balanced]

I had such an impression that the fan became a little bit more quite (although it is rather my wishful thinking). Of course, I have Centrino Hardware Control installed, the profile I'm using is: dynamic switching. Playing a bit with the voltage brought the CPU to the level of 47C, but the fan is still on all the time.

PS: The most enjoable moment for me is when I switch on my TP, the first 3-5 mins, I do enjoy playing around with my notebook... until the fan starts off.

Idling, not even web surfing. The CPU was not adaptive.

After making it adaptive and finding stable undervoltage settings for 6x and 8x, the temperature how hovers between 44-50, but never less than 44. Also, at this level, I oddly find the fan extremely annoying (I'm finally starting to notice it over the central air, and that's loud).

Sounds like something is definitely wrong, doesn't it?. . .

I notice it more after having attempted it. At the moment, I'm a step away from applying AS5 to the processor, which I really don't want to do unless I really have to.

AS5 is short for Artic Silver 5, which is a thermal compound generally applied between desktop processors and their heatsinks because stock "thermal pads" don't conduct enough heat to the heatsinks to make them mildly useful. If I used AS5 on my thinkpad, which I've read here that you can, I'd have to dissemble it, rip the heatsink off the processor, clean off whatever residual thermal compound was there, apply the Artic Silver 5, and then put everything back. The action voids the warranty, but unless IBM actually checks the processor/heatsink layer, they won't notice (I hope).

If applied correctly, it should stay out of sight...

it sounds like a nice idea to me, the only thing is - would the dam fan get more quite or even better switch off... I mean if this thing can reduce my temp by 10C (as they state online), i.e. 38C - it is a deal. (it would be nice to force IBM Service to do it for me, in order not to break the warranty :)
Does smb have a real expirience with this thingy (T42p), anyone?
