W530 max memory capacity

#1 Post by FrankK-F » Sun Oct 16, 2016 3:14 am

My W530 has 32GB ... but I keep getting "out of memory" errors.
I have concurrent apps running ... Autodesk Inventor (200 parts assemblies), Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Trying to load Inventor generated TIFF files (@ 16.5MB) into PS, the error occurs.

Has anybody tried memory beyond 32GB?

Theoretically you should have more than enough RAM.
Have you run Memtest on all 4 modules? http://www.memtest86.com/
You are running W7-64-bit I guess.

16GB modules exist, but at ~$150 or more per module the demand won't be big, I guess.
See e.g. here: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-P ... B0123BRIDK
AFAIK they are all "L" type (low voltage), don't know if those would even work in a W530.

What version of Photoshop? If it's not the 64 bit variety the application itself won't be able to address more than 4GB.

16GB modules will NOT work in a W530: http://www.techrepublic.com/article/16- ... d-to-know/.

For intel boards you need:
Intel Skylake (6000-series) or Broadwell (5000-series) processor
OR
Intel Atom Avoton and Rangeley processors
Current Thinkpads: W530 (functional classic keyboard mod), X301, T61, T60, T43, T23, 600X, 770
Other: mk5 Toughbook cf-19, mk1 Toughbook cf-53

Thank you for your several responses.

Yes ... I have W7-64 installed
Yes ... my apps are 64bit ... exception is PS where I need to run 32bit if I need to run some filters.

But ... the critical input from you is that the W530 system appears to be hardware limited to 32GB ... yet I ask if anybody tried the 16GB chips?

It was I some years ago who pioneered my new A31p with 1GB chips ... compared to 0.5GB max per the A31p spec sheet ... and it WORKED!!

Thus my present inquiry.

get an SSD if you do not have one, and increase the pagefile size manually to something huge, when windows is running out of memory it will swap the least used memory pages to disk until they are requested again.

There maybe also some scratchdisk/cachedisk settings in many graphics applications, increase those also.

and make sure there is more than enough free space in C: driver, because that is where all apps try to put their cache by default.

Well about all I can say is 32 bit Photoshop won't be able to address more than 4GB, which is your immediate bottleneck. Check memory usage in task manager when it starts erroring out and that will tell you a) whether your system is anywhere near its physical memory limit and b) how close Photoshop is to that 4GB limit.
