T60p CPU upgrade problem

#1 Post by YoniG » Sun Oct 16, 2016 6:20 am

I replaced the T2500 in my T60p with a T7600 and when I try to start it, it runs for a few seconds then shuts off, without any beeps. Some times the fan continues running, some times not.
From Belarc, the unit is a 2007FHG, Bus Clock: 167 megahertz
BIOS: LENOVO 79ET65WW (1.09a) 07/27/2006

You need to update the BIOS first (with the T2500 back in) to V2.27
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product ... s/DS013722
Burn the downloaded .ISO with a program like ImgBurn to make a bootable CD.
After the update, put the T7600 back in (with fresh thermal paste!) and it should now work.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I upgraded the BIOS and replaced the CPU, and all seemed well. Then I used NHC to undervolt, and at a certain point the system froze (don't recall if it was BSOD or a failure during NHC tests). Since then, the system usually BSODs during startup. A few times it worked for a minute or two. Initially there were a few different BSOD error messages, but now it's always "Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives... Check your hard drive..."

What I've done:
Ran the BIOS HD test.
Set BIOS to run the memory check on startup.
Used Startup repair to "repair the system", and to restore to a previous point.
Put the HD (an OCZ SSD) in another PC and renamed the NHC.exe file so it wouldn't run on startup. Also ran a thorough disk check.
Booted into safe mode with command prompt. The system freezes after loading CLASSPNP.SYS.
Tried both AHCI and Compliant SATA modes

OCZ does not have the best of reputations.
Apart from that, UNdo that undervolting and see how it then goes.
Also, your CPU might have been overclocked by a previous owner...

OK, after a lot of work I think it's fixed. What did it was editing a few registry keys related to the hard disk, as detailed in:

http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-su ... 00000.html

On restart, the unit installed the IDE and ATA hard disk device drivers. Another restart, and things seems good.

Along the way, I found a well-written list of Windows repair steps:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/21 ... -boot.html

The T60p is noticeably faster. Startup to Firefox appearing takes 40 seconds instead of 50, Youtube HD videos run mores smoothly with about 10% less CPU, and switching tabs and running certain complex web pages in FireFox is snappier.

Dump Firefox, install PaleMoon (32-bit) instead, in combo with Firemin Beta

https://www.rizonesoft.com/download/firemin/
It'll run much better.

I heard about FireMin from you, and it's amazing. So I'll check out PaleMoon.
If it runs most of my FF add-ins, and if it doesn't constantly hit the disk, I'll switch.
Thanks.

Palemoon works with Ublock Origin and Noscript, but I haven't yet looked for a solution to websites telling me I'm running an out of date browser. Depending the site, they may not let you use their service.
