Do you need to be an IBM emplyee to call EPP to place order?

I am interested in a T42 M3U. But I have a question regarding odering:

When calling EPP to place an order, does that person who calls need to be the employee? A friend of mine is an employee, but he's out of town. He gave me his id and name. Is that enough to call? Or I will have to wait until he comes bacK

Do you want to place the order online? www.ibm.com/shop/epp to do it online.

I know people have called IBM for quotes (as you have to do that for a lot of the models since the EPP site doesn't explicitly list them), and you should be able to call them to place an order also.

If you have an IBM employee ID, just call them. The discount is for friends and family as well, no need to pretend.

I'm not sure, but you could try forcing the part number into the EPP site, though I'm not sure if that price be accurate enough (no point in maintaining prices on models you specifically took offline). I suppose you can try at first to see if they really are kept up to date, and if so, you wouldn't have to pester the call-queuing system. =)

Just to chime in with my advice. Get the M3U you'll be very pleased. I'm really happy with mine (had it for about 3 weeks now) and noise has not been a problem at all, its very quiet and as long as you keep the acoustic management on the HD on, the machine is nearly silent.

If you aren't happy with the machine send it back.

Bad pixels always show up in a certain percentage of units (I've been burned twice), but the vibration isn't normal.

When are you experiancing the vibration??? I only experiance a slight vibration when the cd-rom drive is spinning up, otherwise I don't experiance anything. That sucks about the pixel, it seems there are far too many reports of dead/stuck pixels on this forum, maybe I just got lucky. Have you checked the parts list page for your machine? Do you have the Hydis panel? Thats what I have and I find it to be real nice. If the pixel bothers you, I would say return the machine and order a new one.

I think I have a samsung, 11P8348, but that's already much brighter than my Dell, no complaint about that.

The vibration is really minor, happens all the time, especially on the palm rest on the right hand. I think it's because of the 7200RPM drive. This doesn't bother me at all, but my co-work found out.

I really love that machine, but that dead pixel is killing me since I use black background all the time. (xterm, ...).....I think I still have to return it.

But if I order another one and it comes with another defect or comes with even more defects?

Can you get in trouble for using the EPP store with a employee # and last name of someone you don't know?

I just bought my thinkpad, but my friend found someone's employee number and last name, and he was going to use the EPP store but is a little paranoid. I told him I didn't know and not to, but I figure you guys would know more than me. Wasn't sure if they traced them, etc, or the employee got a list of who used their credentials.

OK, lets say that IBM doesn't notify the employee that their ID was used to buy the machine. Your friend uses someone elses ID that he doesn't know to get a 15% discount or whatever...

He's using a persons identity to get a benefit they are entitled to without their permission or consent. I think it's unethical. I think you gave your friend good advice not to use the ID information.

Well how did your friend get the ID? If he got it from a friend who got it from a friends friend that works in IBM, then I wouldn't do that. But if somebody actually posted their code and name on a public message board and said that you are free to use the code, then I guess it's OK.

He found it on a website that an IBM employee posted for certain students at a school to use. I know it's unethical, but it's [censored] stupid for an employee to post it too...

If it's only for *certain* students, then he shouldn't use it (unles he is in the group). I wouldn't use it if I were him.
