HELP with Win7 update

#1 Post by RRHODY » Fri Oct 28, 2016 3:50 pm

Hope someone can help me. A T430 was dropped and the hard drive trashed. I installed a "new" drive with Win 7 Pro 64. Managed to get all the Lenovo drives installed, BUT have been unable to update Win7; Checking for updates goes on FOREVER. I've searched the web and tried several suggested fixes, none of which worked. Windows was no help, Google searches led me to complex threads that were WAY beyond my level of expertise [86 years old, with hands and eyes to match]. Apparently this is a prevalent problem but there doesn't seem to be a patch or simple workaround that someone with my lack of experience can handle. Is there any hope?

Here you go...

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... x?id=49540

Install and reboot, then check for updates again. Should take about 10 minutes.

Windows Update Standalone Installer is "Searching for updates on this computer" and keeps going. For how long should I let it search?

When I run this on another unit it takes only seconds. The unit with the original problem is doing the same thing as when Windows update is started from the desktop.

Try downloading and saving the file to the desktop, then reboot and run it immediately. The Windows Update service gets stuck in a (nearly) infinite loop once it starts checking for updates, and is preventing the standalone installer from running since it needs to use that service.

what i needed to do once:

1. disable windows updates, set it to never check
(To disable windows updates, go to Control Panel, select Windows Update, from the left, select change settings, from the drop down box select “Never check for updates”.)

2. restart

3. install the update you downloaded.

4. restart

5. re-enable windows updates that you disabled in first step, and let it install updates normally now, either set to automatic check or manually check ..etc.
