What are the implications of this damage?

Found a decent W520 for sale. However there is damage near the rear fan port on the bezel. Per the attached pic is this significant due to it being located so close to the hinge? Run or deal?

If the rest is good and you are willing to replace the base, add its price to the total, and if the price is still attractive, then buy.
I'd find such a crack enough reason to run, unless the above could apply.

I agree with RBS. Normally I wouldn't touch something that's had a large crack or missing pieces, as it could have been from abuse. There could be possibilities that the hinge or magnesium roll cage are also damaged, and in that case you will have an even more expensive repair.

Generally, lack of damage to the outer case is a good indicator that the machine
has been well taken care of. A cosmetically good looking unit is more likely
to require less work and be more reliable, based on my limited experience.
