1992 Thinkpad for sale

#1 Post by JanisB » Tue Dec 06, 2016 2:50 am

I have a 1992 Thinkpad for sale. I am moving to Florence, Italy, and I'd love to send it to a safe home. It has a separate disk drive, a printer cable, the attachment for various cables, and the instruction booklet, and is in very good condition. I tried to sell it on eBay 5 years ago, before I moved, but only had a week to advertise. I'm in the same position now.

Anyone looking for one of these machines? How much do they go for? In an earlier thread, there was a collector in Paris -- if you're still there, contact me as I'm flying into Paris on Dec. 14.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I'm assuming that you are talking about the year when you mention 1992. As far as I know, there was no MODEL TYPE of 1992 ever released. It would help if you post the seven character TYPE of the system as that is what most people here will need to figure out exactly what you have. The format is 1234-ABC. The code should be on a bar code label on the bottom of the system. It is also normally in the BIOS menu as the first seven characters of the system unit number.

Sorry, it's been awhile since I used it, and in retrospect I believe I had to send it in for servicing. Before the serial number is 2630-2TU. (maybe ZTU). I opened it to see that it is a 701C

I'm not the collector you talk about, but I'm in Paris on 14th. PM me the price if you already know it, so I can reflect on that:) Is the machine functional?
x220/i7-2620M/8GB/256gb.ssd/ips/debian (main driver)
x230/i5/8GB/500gb.hdd+256gb.m2ssd/tn/debian+win7 (better half)

I have no idea what a reasonable price would be for this. Suggestions anyone?
I am pretty sure it is functional -- if you still have the small diskettes and a way to support Windows 3.

Someone tell me how to post pictures. Thanks.

More on the function. [1] it turns on right away [2] the screen reads that the battery is bad. [3] pressing ESC to continue, the machine asks to redo setup. Alas, I got rid of the disks a while back :( I have been moving around too much!

Here are the components:
main body with ethernet port on side, headphone jack, et.
attachable disk drive with cable
attachment at back for printer cable, monitor cable, etc.
two power cables with transformer boxes
two printer cables
instructional manuals

I understand. you can use Imgur.com for easy, registration-free image posting, and post only links here...

I'm afraid it doesn't work. The link leads only to your profile page, but there are no photos just a message 'sorry but there's nothing here'.

Thanks. I will not declare anything here, I'm still thinking about it and meanwhile trying to help. To help you get familiar with the prices, you may want to see ebay listnings. If you search for 'thinkpad 701c' and then in 'advanced search' select 'sold listings' you'll find what prices has this reached in past auctions. I see everything between 80$ and 450$ mainly depending on on condition and country.
It's better if I say straight away I'm not any collector, I was just thinking of getting is as a semi-distraction (maybe I could renovate the battery etc.) if it's rather cheap. If you're thinking of getting any serious money I'd much rather advice you put this on ebay, even after moving to Europe. It seems (from the aforementioned listings) you may get much more money in EU than in CA/US for it.

Thanks Evening-Hunger. I tried to send a PM but did not get a link. If you would like to PM me, or directly mail to me at drjanisbell@gmail.com, we can discuss this further. Regards
