Good places to buy a X220 with IPS.

#1 Post by pndspirit » Tue Dec 13, 2016 11:06 am

I'm looking for a good deal on a X220 with an IPS, preferably not a tablet. Currently I'm scouting in ebay and olx (Bulgarian ebay), but there haven't been any good deals for about a week.

What I'm looking for is 130-50 euro maximum, depending of the storage. Are there any other websites where I can find such a deal?

Welcome to the forum. :)

1) Have some patience. 1 week is nothing. I spent months trying to get the X220 I wanted at the time. :)
2) Forget about ordering from overseas; the shipping alone will be half the cost.

Guess so. I thought I found the deal - 138 euro + shipping for IPS X220. Turned out the guy was lying about the IPS. Broke my heart. :(

You at least looking at double that.

Yes on 1), but absolutely no on 2); in many parts of Europe Thinkpads are very rare. They are also way overpriced here. I imported my T61 from the USA in 2007 and in 2012 I bought a W520 from a German who imported it from the USA.
Used prices are equally insane (and rare). Think €500(+) for a Thinkpad W520. Not even with top specs.

That's probably why it's all Dell Precision's and HP Elitebooks / Z-Books here.

That wasn't a general statement, but when your max price is 150 euro, you don't have too much room for overseas shipping costs.

That's true, but the closest is still import.

Most sellers only ask 25-30 bucks for US > EU shipping on used X220

That's very strange. How do they ship? USPS asks over $60 on a medium-sized flat rate (which is the smallest option they have that can accommodate a laptop). Do these sellers "eat" half the shipping cost, or did I miss a cheaper option?

That's via that program where the seller ships it to eBay, then eBay does the taxes etc. and uses it's discounted rates to ship it across the ocean.

But some sellers enter the weight wrong and then they indeed will end up eating up a portion of the shipping costs on shipping it to the eBay center in the US. My guess is that those listings with $30 shipping US > EU is based on the weight of the laptop only, which would land one in the <2 kg category. Including charger and packaging, it's ofcourse not <2 kg anymore.

But isn't it more like $45? Medium Flat Rate Box -2;

Anyway, if I look at German DHL (which I use sometimes to ship international), it would be €36;

In general, US > Europe shipping is ridiculously expensive.

That's only for price group 1, which includes Canada and... Canada. Most of Europe is in Price Group 5.

Apart from some cheaper rates, those eBay buyers also have to cope with eBay's weird shipping methods, such as extremely long shipping times (items are probably rowed across the Atlantic) and nearly impossible, almost non-existent tracking (see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=115913 )

My 25 kg printer package arrived swiftly from that program.
Tracking also depends on the local post service, which differs in every country here. Unless it's FedEx or UPS, but those are even more expensive.

I got mine from eBay, didn't know it had an IPS in it but it was a 2640m so took the gamble and bought it, was pleasantly surprised
