WTB: ThinkPad 765L
WTB: ThinkPad 765L
Hi all
I'm looking for a ThinkPad 765L in working condition.
I've no specific requirements for disk and memory as long as the computer itself is OK.
I live in Denmark but I'm willing to pay for international shipping.
Please PM if you are willing to sell.
Thanks
-Kim

Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
hello kim and welcome to the forum..
uhmm, that is an unusual request..
the 765L was a bit of a strange thinkpad model..
may i ask why that particular model..?
i have a bunch of 760 series in varying conditions but no 765 series..
that one had a larger display if my memory is correct..

Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
Thanks for the welcome and for running this very nice forum.
The 765L has the right specs (for me) for running the older NeXT systems, which I would like to give a go on a laptop.
Even though several of the other Thinkpads runs the OS with proper graphic, the sound is a different matter. There seems to be a lot with the MWave Audio which isn't supported by any of the NeXT drivers.

Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
well, ok.. thats fair.. mwave was, well, not one of IBM's greatest achievements.. worked well in the 755/701 series but there sure is no support for it these days..
have no idea where any 765 series can be found.. did you try ebay..?
or wait for the holidays to be over and see if someone here has one..
i have a friend who took one around the world in his 40 odd foot sailboat but i don't know if he still has it..
i borrowed the recovery CD from him and when i took them out of the envelope the silver stuck to the plastic window and that was IT for them..
all that data peeled right off the polycarbonate CD..
if you wish i'll give him a call and see if he still has it but it HAS been 15 years more or less..

Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
765s are some of the rarest Thinkpads. It is basically a 760 with a 13.3 screen. If your concern is not to have mWave, you might want to consider a 760XL, which is much more common. It uses a sound system which is not mWave. Some 765s actually use mWave as well.
Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
Are they rare?
Collection: 310ED, 350C, 360C, 365C, 365XD, 380D, 380XD, 380Z, 390E, 390X, 560X, 600, 600E, 701C, 750CS, 755C, 755CD, 760C, 760CD, 760ED, 760EL, 760XD, 760XL, 765L, 765D, 770, 770E, 770Z, T21, T22, T23, T30, A20P, A21P, A22M, A30, A31, A31P, T40, T42, T43P, T60, T61, R32, R40, R52
Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
A screen the size of the 765L's was like running a 17" thinkpad right now. At least 90% of this site is on 15.4" or smaller TP's i would say, the rest being those crazy W owners... Sorry, I don't mean to turn this into a discussion thread. But I did want to emphasize how much easier it is to buy non MWave classic Thinpad. I sold one here not long ago even.Unknown_K wrote:Are they rare?

Would be sweet if he still had it and wanted to sell. I can absolutely wait until you get in touch.BillMorrow wrote:well, ok.. thats fair.. mwave was, well, not one of IBM's greatest achievements.. worked well in the 755/701 series but there sure is no support for it these days..

Some of the old ThinkPads could do Sound Blaster emulation - I don't know about MWave but the Cirrus Logic in my current 600 does SB emulation in OpenStep.
Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
I have the 765L and 765D, one is ESS sound and one is MWAVE (probably the only difference between the two).
Nice machines so I can see why you would want one, mine are not for sale.

Re: WTB: ThinkPad 765L
Why not get 765D and find ESS module from ebay?
Cheers, Jason

I wasn't aware that this was possible; I thought the chip was on the motherboard itself.thinkpadcollection wrote:Why not get 765D and find ESS module from ebay?
