Favorite 4:3 LCD is damaged NEC MultiSync LCD1765
Hi all, well sadly during a move a box fell against my NEC MultiSync LCD1765 when I was not around. The monitor still works but there is a patch of dead pixels in the upper right hand corner. is the TFT replacable or is this monitor junk now? aside from that I could keep it for a compact monitor to find out if stuff "just works" or not. but shame, this was my favorite.

That's not a 4:3 monitor. It's 5:4!
(sorry, couldn't resist)
Unfortunately, batches of dead pixels usually indicate physical damage and cannot be fixed on an LCD. Was the box heavy? Otherwise it's surprising. How big / noticeable is this batch? Could it just be a dust spec that moved around? It's hard to know without seeing firsthand or a good photo.
In any case, if you are just looking for a nice 4:3 / 5:4 monitor, there are plenty of nice options you can find used, in the 19-20". If you are specifically looking for a small one, your options are more limited, but you might be able to find this exact one. You may even be able to find just the panel, although that's less likely, IMO. Still, given that you are in the US, with a rather big and favorable used electronics market, I believe you will be able to find what you want, once you decide what it is.

yes. 4:3 (and 5:4) panels are deathly unpopular
i used to work for a construction company and we would deploy maybe a few PCs for a new building going up. We would then take the PCs back when the building was completed.
Some of the PCs were deemed not worth bringing back so we were told to remove the HDD and bin the PC and monitor.
Not an uncommon practice. They might have storerooms full of 17 to 19 to 21" "square" LCDs not worth more than $50 and they get covered in concrete dust and whatever.
Be that as it may, you get these lying around everywhere in the IT trade.
Unless the unit has some significance, like sync on green or some such, not worth too much bother.

I sold a bunch of 17" 1280x1024 monitors in perfect conditions for $8 - $10 on Craigslist last year. One of them was an NEC, possibly the exact same model as yours. I am sure you can find them that cheap, if not cheaper.

Look for a slightly larger replacement: the HP LP1965 which is a 19" 5:4 (1280x1024).
I have one that I've been using daily since early 2008.
Beautiful machine, flawless, perfect for my needs.

Do you dare to turn your nose up at NEC LCD monitors.
They are the nicest ones among others besides Vizio. Get another Nec if necessary.
We have a Nec 19" LCD in use for *years*, like 10+, sharp and bright, no sign of CCFL going away.
Cheers, thinkpadcollection

Yes I dare.
I've had Eizo, NEC and Sony Trinitron monitors, bulky monsters but with great displays.
The ones I had were just too small in the long run (15").
I still have two ancient NEC LCD Multisync 1525V flatscreen monitors (15", 1024x768), which are flawless up till this day!

I bought a beautiful 2nd-hand 19" Eizo for a client a few months back, to replace the 10-year old 17" Dell LCD that came with the Pentium 4 PC that she owned.
I checked the Eizo's manufacture date before buying it: 2012 (!!) so I reckon it's gonna last her another ten years or so.
Coincidentally, there's a 19" NEC monitor (1960NX IIRC) in my workshop. Too bad the LCD panel's in a bad shape, but the rest of the parts-- power supply, controller board, backlight inverter-- are still working. I hope I could find a replacement panel (Samsung LTM190E1-L03 or similar) for this. ~_~
