IBM a/b/g Wireless card performance

#1 Post by Mr_Roboto » Wed Jun 15, 2005 2:04 pm

Hello there,

I was wondering if any one knew the performance specs for the IBM a/b/g Wireless cards. (ie antenna gain in XXdbi, and card power output in XXmW?)

I share internet access with my landlords. I live in the basement and the office with the AP is on the second floor. I can not seem to get a good connection. I am assumming that distance and building materials are to blame. I am currently looking for a good wireless card with an external antenna connector in an effort to boost my connection.

In short I am trying to insure that I get a card and antenna that perform beter than the internal card an antenna. Cost is an issue, so the sky is not the limit.

Machine:
Thinkpad 2373-HVU
wireless card: IBM a/b/g
antenna: internal
OS: XP Pro

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,

Regards,

Rich

Get a WiFi extender antenna for the WAP rather than another WiFi card.

I have the same problem...and I'm sitting right under my AP! anyways, I got a USB thing I have sticking out the window which works really well...other than getting DC'ed every once in a while...I don't have any problems with it. just remember to disconnect it during rain just to be safe.

Get a WiFi extender
That sounds like an elegant solution and for $20, give or take. I will ask them if I could update their AP for them.

I am still curious to find out what the specs for the a/b/g card are. The TABook does not seem to give this kind of detail. Any ideas as to where I can find them?

I have also heard good things about the orinoco gold as well and the Senao 2511CD Plus cards. I may still upgrade to one of these cards in an effort to boost my wireless performance around campus as well.

RadioLabs.com seem to have some good deals. How is their reputation and is there any thing special that I should look for?

Questions Questions Questions.... Thanks for your help and input. It is a valuable service that you people provide, and I appreciate it.
