Reflective/Transflective ThinkPads!

#1 Post by thomase13 » Sun Feb 05, 2017 7:26 pm

Hello fellow ThinkPadders! :)

I have a wonderful T60p that I love dearly and use daily (despite its broken rollcage) but the monitor is pretty sensitive to the ambient light. It is usually fine indoors but the screen isn't very bright so it's not really usable. It isn't very even either, especially at night, and the dimmest setting is still too bright, though f.lux does help quite a bit. This shouldn't be that surprising since it has a plain old XGA TFT monitor.

So I am looking for a secondary ThinkPad which can be used in various ambient lights — mainly something that won't keep me up at night, though the ability to use it on a sunny day (like in direct sunlight) would be nice as well.

Now, according to Wikipedia, the Super-twisted nematic display "can be made purely reflective for viewing under direct sunlight."

Fortunately for me, ThinkWiki has provided a handy table of all ThinkPads equipped with such a thing!

Some models, such as the 700T, are explicitly advertised as transflective, but I don't know if this can be assumed.
All the ThinkPads in the table are Classic models and so I am hoping some people here can attest to their Classic ThinkPads' reflective/transflective qualities!

Are some models better than others for this? Are colour screens any worse than monochrome?

Do let me know! :)

The Samsung panel used in the 14.1" T60p was quite readable in daylight, oddly enough.

Interesting!

Mine is a 15" T60p with plain old TFT screen to clarify (DEFINITELY not FlexView, as I learned after ordering it!) :P

Also, I have seen the X60 advertised as "MultiView" which I read somewhere it was transflective, but it's still backlit, so it might be good outside, but I can't imagine it would be as good as a front-lit screen!

I thought this would be the right place to post...

Can anyone here tell me about their experience with their front-lit ThinkPads? Monochrome or colour? in past or present??
