T43: Can you replace the x300?

#1 Post by skibum1981 » Thu Jun 16, 2005 5:56 am

Also, was wondering if anyone has replaced the x300 with a better video card. I actually can't find any of ATI's PCI-express mobile graphics cards for sale on the internet. Has anyone found any of these (pref x800)? Has anyone swapped the video card?

Umm, the video cards are not swappable like they are on a desktop machine. Most video cards on latpops apart from a few exceptions in very high end gaming laptops are soldered to the system board. Some people have replaced them by ripping them off and resoldering another card, but I would not recommend it. If you are very concerned about video, you might want to go for another model that has the right video card for you.

I'm an EE, I think I can handle the soldering :)

I haven't actually looked inside any of the new laptops to figure out how they vid cards are configured. Good to know...

Wait, doesn't the chipset in the T43 support multiple video modules???

How about a docking station that accepts another vid card?

A laptop motherboard is VERY different to your typical soldering job...if something goes wrong and a pin (ANY pin) breaks, that pin will cost you $2K. If IBM wanted you to be able to upgrade they would allow you to (they do on EVERY other bit of the Thinkpad). If you want a faster video card for gaming, look elsewhere. If you want a faster video card for OpenGL, go for the T43p. If you want a better video card for multi-monitor, get yourself a dock and put a second PCI card in it. But unless you got money to spend or you are extremely confident, I would not suggest it. Mind you, this will 101% invalidate your warranty.

Some of us wish our TPs didn't stutter on everything 3D. Infact, an R52 kicks my T43's graphical processing power right now.

I agree, if you've tried updating the drivers, there is obviously something wrong (hardware wise) with your T43.
