trying to install Android x86 (anything really!)

I want to use Android x86 on my Atom based machine but it dosn't seem to work... I can get Android x86 to run off "live cd" from my T440s but not from this dell atom machine... Android X86 just shuts off the machine when trying to load from both a usb stick and usb DVD drive..... has anybody installed Android x86? also ubuntu doesn't work as it also shuts off the machine and windows xp blue screens before I can install... windows 8 and 10 work but they are so slow it's not usable as this is only a single core Atom without hyper threading and with 2 GB of ram saudered to the mainboard.... is this thing just screwed? I don't have any product key sticker or windows or o/s identification on back or anywhere on it so I have no idea what this thing came with... I got it for free without any o/s and I believe this dell computer might be old enough that it might have come with windows vista business
