Intel 2915 802.11a/b/g miniPCI works great in IBM X22

#1 Post by Pennstate » Thu Jun 16, 2005 3:26 pm

Just want to add this sucess story to the record for upgrading 802.11b miniPCI cards to the newest Intel 2915 a/b/g wireless card. After the upgrade, I detected over 23 APs in my apartment. You do lose the modem function. I sold the old 802.11b + modem card for $20, making the net cost of the upgrade to be ~$17. Now, I can share files with my Powerbook at a rate close to 7MB per second.

It should work on any x2x model that has integrated wireless

Oh, btw, I got the 2915 card at newegg.com

Thanks for the update. I would like to do the same to an X24. Did you lose your 10/100 Ethernet connection along with losing the modem?

Good to know :) It's nice for users of older ThinkPads that the BIOS won't lock out new wireless mPCI cards.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

I still have Ethernet. That's controlled by an onboard chip on the motherboard.

I have a question; are you able to disable and enable the wireless radio using FN+F5?

I don't think so. I have not tried. But the Intel ProSet software has a "Turn wireless on/off" item on the pull-down menu of its tasktray icon. I think the 2915 is such a power-efficient chip that I leave it on all the time.

The X22 doesn't have a LED for the wireless anyways so it doesn't really matter to me. Even the powerbook doesn't have a "hotkey" for turning on and off wireless.

Does the intel 2915 abg from newegg work with the X31? Or is the bios lock a problem like before with the other cards?

Now that's an interesting alternative... I didn't think about that. I only know of the switch that's located within the device properties device panel from the device manager. Installing the drivers using software installer also doesn't install any ProSet utilities. I'll look into it; thanks.
