Buy an X41 tablet now or wait until the next upgrade?

#1 Post by ozone » Thu Jun 16, 2005 4:42 pm

So far, I've seen two very positive reviews of the X41 tablet with almost no downsides mentioned (other than the lack of the optical drive). I'm in the position where I might need to buy another notebook rather quickly because one of student's notebooks died and I had to give her my old X31. I find myself missing the small compact size.

For long time IBM users, is it wise to buy the 'first edition' of a new IBM model? Or should I try to hold off and wait until a second version with fewer bugs becomes available? I know the wait could be long. Admittedly, there seem to be very few possible problems that could come up with the X41 tablet that was just released, so maybe there will be few fixes if any.

Thanks.

If I were you I would wait for at least a month to see what daily users have to say about the tablet.

if it is a 5 week lead time, they will have the x43 tablet out by the time it comes.

The only trouble with waiting for the next model is that 1) You might never buy one if you keep wondering what better might come out and 2) If everyone did this then there might not be a new model.

Look at the transnote - IMHO a great machine ahead of its' time but it didn't sell - there were no new models and is probably the reason why it took so long for a Tablet ThinkPad

Thanks for all the replies. 4 to 5 weeks, huh? Well, that sounds a bit too long to bother waiting for.

You know what I'd really want is a 13.3" widescreen convertible tablet. That would be sweet... :?

I'm going to be doing the same thing, except I don't expect to get anything in time for the fall semester. If I order the X41T now, I can get it by August, so if I order in August, I'll get it... ??? October?...

I doubt there will be an X42T by August, so whatever comes out at the end of the year will hopefully improve on small quirks, flaws, annonyances, etc. of the X41T, and will also hopefully ship by January 2006.

Well, Supply will slowly pick up, and in a few weeks you should see more SKU's posted on the website. So the lead time in getting one should shorten.
