Frankenpad best heatsink

#1 Post by alisan » Fri Apr 28, 2017 2:19 pm

Hello,

First time I build a Frankenpad, very happy with it, so far so good.

I hate to ask stupid question, but I really didn't find something conclusive on internet. What is the correct heatsink to use with a Frankenpad? I'm currently using the heatsink from T60, but the left side of the palm rest is a bit warm because of the integrated GPU. I have bought a heatsink of a T61 from ebay, but when I mount it it does not fully cover the GPU, the seller said it is for a 4:3 14 inch T61, not really sure.

So my question is, what is the best heatsink to use with a Frankenpad?

Thx

Johan

Take a T500 fan and swap T61's heatsink fans. Nothing else. T60 and T500 does not land on the chipsets properly in T61 due to height differences.

I know that this has been discussed several times, but I was really confused reading around recommendations.

Anyway I ended up buying the 42w2028, hopefully will decrease the heat of my Frankenpad

I would be interested in your temps, I have a NOS t61 mobo for future use (at the moment my t60 with 3gb ram, ssd and ati x1400 still holds up), I am wondering what temps I can expect from that build. If interested I have my t500 heatsink mod and current system temps written down in the pinned "How to make your Ati t60 run cool and quiet" thread.

I would definitely recommend undervolting your cpu, it definitely makes an improvement in temps (and doesn't affect performance). Also I seem to remember reading on this forum somewhere, that you can undervolt your nvidia 140m gpu in the t61, to make that run cooler too. I wanted to undervolt my ati x1400 gpu, but there is no way to do that with this card.

I have already undervolted my T9300 with linux-phc. The CPU runs very cool, under normal usage (firefox+ some text editing ) CPU temperature is around 40 C, almost 15 degrees less than my x220 sandybridge i5. Under the same load the GPU reaches 50/55. I hope that with the new heatsink the situation of the GPU will be better. The CPU idles at 35 degrees.

I will post here temps with the 42w2028 which should arrive in a month :?

Well you could have asked on the Marketplace, I could easily source some and it takes 3 working days to get with them to Italy :)

Honestly, I've tested numerous fans to make my frankie cool. T61p fan turned out to work the best way. Still, it is the hardware that makes the difference. I ran T9300 ES -58C/88C idle/load and swapped to T9500; temps dropped by 10C each.
